Gear stick has alot of play, esp in neutral. I have no problems selecting gears, but it is quite annoying. Any ideas? Heard it could be a selector bush, or some strange plastic bush along the linkage somewhere?

Describe what you mean by alot of play? How much movement is there?

Mine moves about 10mm either way in gear.

Thanks

Full travel at knob end in neutral is the whole length of the selector ie: I can just flick it from side to side and it feels like nothing is 'there'. Play in gear is probably worse than it should be. I dont think this car has been maintained very well, and it has 89k on the clock. Its now in my TLC, so I want to make it feel loved and happy

the springs for it are on inside the cover on the gearbox. its really easy to get at and remove

worth taking off and checking.

When you say cover on the gear box... what part do you mean? As if I was standing in front of my car looking at the gearbox, where is it located?

Where do I get springs? Ebay or FIAT?

look on the top of the gearbox where the two cables connect. pop these off and remove the cover that these are connected to. think there is about 8bolts and one has an earth strap connected to it.

once removed have a look inside. its got leavers and two springs on each end of a shaft. when you move one of the leavers that moves the springs it should always self centre. the other leaver will "clonk" into place

If its damaged. take it to a scrappy and swap it with a cento that has a working stick... :p

just been for a drive and the play in gear is about 2 inches from left to right, at the knob end.
