Hello,
Great Site,I'm telling the World :) I have a 2001 Siecento that I have totally renovated...
The latest (and twas hoped the last) repairs came
yest n 2day... In the form of a 2ndhand radfan n
PAS upper-column n motor........
The PAS I bought is now fitted, after working till 11pm
last night, quitting MISERABLE with the
dash/wires/column hangin' off amidst a mess of tools..

I was really hoping it would be fine now, after sorting loadza things b4 goin'4mot, n then failing on ~
front discs, and PAS....
I immedi bought new fr. discs n fitted them...
Waited4PAS to Arrive, was NIGHTMARE to fit...
As said last night was quite an Episode....

ANYWAY Now,after testing new fan 1st ~ I have fabricated mounts2fit new radfan2my frame (couldnt get correct fan),
fits a treat, Problem is it IS NOT COMING ON...
(he could not test emmissions cos it was getting too hot...)
Upon inspection Fan was SOLID and fuse blown...
HELP HELP HELP

PAS ~ as said finally fitted new motor2day,didnt feel a need2fit entire upper column(altho might as well have,it wouldnt've been any harder),reconnected everything refitted dash and . . . . . .
DOESNT WORK....
I have three more days2take back for Free ReTest...

Will he allow me to have NO PAS ???
OR will he say its okay since now it is off
(reason for failing was worked1way but not other)

Will it drive okay to drive without PAS(I know it will be heavier!) ????

I have one last question which is thoroughly inferior to the rest, but I had to snip wires on airbag as there was
NO Way to disconnect the wires and allow me to remove Steering Wheel, when I reconnected them n switched everything on the lil light was on the dash
(I tried the diff ways with wires n just together!)

Look,I know there is a lot above, if you can help
PLEASE DO, but just deal with what you have time/knowledge about, and leave the rest...

Right now my Immediate concern is the RADFAN
I am rabidly devouring Masses of Topics Archived here
in Order to find Answers...

Thankyou
Paul

Was the fan motor seized before you fitted it?

Motor seized would blow fuse, so that needs to be sorted before you try it again.

You will need a new squib for your airbag, you should not have cut the wires.

Does the eps light come on when the ignition is at pos 1?

Cheers

HOURS of work, Fan Issue Overheating

Thanks, the Radfan was siezed and the 30 amp fuse blown...
This was how it was when I bought the car...
The PAs is not an Issue Now..

My Concern now is making this fan to work as it should
I know the fan works as I tested it b4 i fitted it...
So, I need to solve this and am going down now to fit a
Couple of Earths, 1 from engine to chassis and 1 from
radfan to chassis, and also check the connection is good from old black multiplug onto radfan, it clicks in,but since the fan i have fitted is from a mark1 Siecento and mine is a mark 2 it could be it is not a good connection...
Also I am going to Bleed the System fully from both bleed screws after fittin my new punto 87 degree thermostat I have just bought from fiat..
I will also be checking connections and wires..
I have learned that, like fords, fiats' wires can rot from the insdie out, so it may not be obvious when a wire is Duff...
So a good thing to check when issues crop~up and cannopt be easily sorted...

Radiator Fan Problem

Hello,
Quick Update, got the MOT today :):):):):):)
But had to fit a switch for the fan and situated it in the
Ashtray first thing this morn b4 i went to the Garage...

Now I need to fix this Issue ~

The Radfan does NOT Come on as it should ie when the engine gets
HOT... I have fitted a new thermostat from Fiat (87 deg panda one)

So any suggestions as to why it will not come on would be Gratefully
Recieved... BTW the engine is a 1.1 MPI and the plate is 2001
I would like to know if I am right in assuming these only have one
switch/sensor in the water, ie the one that is called the fanswitch
and on mine i think it is situated behind the thermostat, about 7 inch...
So, do I just have one,as opposed to what i think the spi had, namely two ?
I cannot see any other wires going to the rad at all, so i do not think
there is one in the rad...

THANKS
Paul
:):)
:)

Thankyou Kristian...
Hmmm... I think this is what I need to replace then
Paul

You have replaced the fuse, but have you checked the relay (near to the ecu), there is one dedicated to the fan. Mauve/purple ish and grey/balc large wires going into it
Mate, that is my next port of call then :p:p:)
Thankyou.. ~Are they next to the Fuses
I will have to get that replaced then...
If I bridge the fanswitch turn ign on
AND it still aint coming on, then
its got to be Wiring OR Relay
THANKYOU

They should be on the passenger side in the engine bay near the ECU at the rear.

There will be two relays as far as i remember. REmove one and the car won't start, the other is then the fan relay.

edit- you can't just bridge the temperature sensor though, it a a resistive element, and not just a switch, so it won't like thast method of testing.

Oh okay (y) I think I have seen this when I was checking Fuses :rolleyes: would it be next to three fuses (high~rating) and under a
plastic cover with 2x10mm nuts ontop

Thankyou for the heads~up on the bridging~issue... I thought it was a fanswitch, but it is not then  it is
a temp~switch that tells the ECU the temp, which then makes a decision as
to when to start the fan :idea:
So, perhaps it would be a good idea to
replace the Relay and then see if it is
Cool (no pun intended:D) with that, ie working normally, if not then maybe replace the temp~switch ?
You really have been helpful mate
Thanks
Paul

You could always test the relay, and test the power supply while your at it, rather than just replace it.

Great Idea (y)(y)(y)
This is Very Appealing since I am SKINT
Having Spent FAR too much on my Car
But on the bright side I have learned a lot and discovered that in the Fiat Scene there are as friendly helpful People as
in the Ford Scene where I am Active (y)
So a BIG (y)(y)(y) To Kristian and SPD

TOP~ADVICE
Thankyou...

ps I recently bought a lil electric~screwdriver . . . . . .
When I put it on a connection it lights~up n stuff :eek::eek::eek::eek: So I think I can know if this relay is getting power, and I think by putting it on the power out metal tab (by leaving a bit sticking out) i could see if it is givingpower out...
OH, hang on... if I remove it,and out a live to the correct terminal, then it should put power out, so I can test that ..
And then I can test if live is getting to it
Since I cannot bridge a fanswitch, how do i test it  Should I get the engine hot first, switch it off, get my "stall" together, and test ?
Would it not be easier to try and test the temp switch, or do you think it would be the relay rather, sorry to be so active about this, you have all been GREAT (y)
:):)
:)

Take the relay out, apply a 12V, you could even use a 9V cell, circuit across the switching side. You should hear and feel it 'click', and click back again with the power removed.

You can then use a meter across the power terminals to make sure resistence goes to zero when the relay is switched on.

HOURS of work, Fan n PAS Issue

Thanks SPD... I do not fully know what to do, but I will
find the one and remove it and try and get it to Click
if it does I take it is working and does not need
replacing... If this is the case and the radfan is
still not coming on as it should then i should prolly replace
the temp switch which i have sourced at 15 del
Thanks
:):):)
:):)
:)

A relay is an electric switch.

it uses a small amount of current to operate a solenoid to switch a larger current, thereby keeping the larger current away from, in this case, the ecu.

By putting 12V across the switching terminals, it should click.

At that point the infinite resistance across the other two connections will go to zero.

So set your meter to Ohms and watch what happens.

Cheers

Hey there,
I'm so sorry to be a pain  I don't have a meter, so thats not an option, nor am i getting one (atmo) But I do have a elec screwdriver :)
Now I have located the two relays, when i remove one the car does not start, so i know which one is the radfan one....
When you say across the terminals ~ what do you mean ? I took it to my jumpstarter pack, did my usual test with a bulb to see i had power, placed the live on one term, and the earth on the other ~ nothing, I tried to get it to click... But it wouldnt, I was unsure what I should put where... I knew the large terms were prolly the ones....
If I could simply establish if it is done or not that would be Great (y)

HOURS of work, Fan Issue

Hello,
I have just spoke to George th owner of the Fiat Garage, and
he says to swop them over, if the engine still starts then the
relay is fine :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Why did I not think of that :confused::bang::bang:
A new Temp Sensor is £50 :eek::eek::eek:
So I have foned jiminwatford from here who was VERY HELPFUL
in sending me a replacement PAS Motor and a radfan...
He is going to try and help..
So, I am going down shortly to see if the relay is working
and to weld a wheel~arch lip onto a Volvo
Paul

Hey, been down and swopped the relays, the car still starts, so both relays are working..
I am in talks to try and secure a 2nd hannd temp switch cos they are £50 new (n)(n)(n)
So, need to get that and get the fan working correctly....
(y)

Hi Kritip I am geting a 2nd hand one (as above twice:bang:)
You and SPD have been Absolutley Great :):):):):)
Thankyou....
As for the Multimeter, I think I will have to, I have been
eyeing one where I bought the elec s/driver from...
As for a fiver, I will have to find this "maplins" never heard of them..
And as for Scrapyard, where I live there is not one :cry::cry:
