Pulled out of work yesterday and the power steering failed as I did a right turn. Everthing went hard like manual steering, little light flickered and then it kicked in again. Restarted the car and every is okay? Strange...

Did a 380mile sprint today along the A1(m) and M25 and everything is okay, turned a few heads from the big cars by the little blue SX bombing the outside lane :-D - excellent fuel return as well, full tank of £20 for the 380 mile trip - got to get that spoiler sorted out for extra pulling power ;)

So what cause the P.Steering to fail for that short time? manual said something to do with the heat, but thats got to be wrong? I am thinking about the unlevel surface at work where I park.? Suggestions?

Another downside, stone chip on my newly paint Abarth Side Skirt, Dam!

i thin kthat the power steering fluid level is checked at every service - but you could mention that you have had problems with it - of course they may just try and rip you off if you do....

Gaz, your right, I always thought its electric and it is. Can't find any thing else in the book about the P.Steering other than the over heat.

Hasn't popped up again so one of those things i guess. Gemling in the system?

Thinking back when I first had my sei about 3 months ago I had felt my p.steering go it only happened the once and when I canned it over a speed bump maybe the electronics just scrambled for a few seconds and reset it self I dont know.

Try taking it to a fiat garage or a fiat specialist with diagnostic equipment, if there is any problems it should show on there computers.

dam handy on these back road, rabbits just jump out on you. Nothing else has happened, so one to miss I guess until it happens again.

My 2002 Seicento sometimes pulls the power steering failure problem. I found that it only happens if I turn the ignition key to start instantly. If I allow the car to go through its self check procedures before operating the starter, the steering works OK. So, key to position 1(ignition on), check lights come on then go off, then key to position 2 (start) for engine start.

This model does have an electric steering assist which has its own control unit. The control unit is sensitive to the self check process and appears to default to fail mode if the process is interupted by starting too quickly.

This can sometimes happen with the key recognition code. I tend to alternate the two blue keys on a week to week basis. If a key isn't used for a while the key code light can be a bit sluggish in going out. If you attempt to start car before code light is extinguished it will not start. Mr local FIAT dealer has quoted £1100 (yep eleven hundred) to fix code defect! My local non franchised FIAT specialist says generally this is not a real problem and can be fixed for a meagre sum of beer tokens!

So when starting car, key in, be patient and then when lights are out hit the starter.
