That surely defeats the object of spending a quarter of the value of your car on one?!

I really don't understand the concept. Surely it's a "show off" item (considering the cost)? What's the point of having a plate with your initials and a date which looks like any other plate, seriously, what's the point? It's like me replacing all my glass on the car even though it's in perfect condition for a couple of hundred quid but only myself and a few mates would know; although the benefit would be insignificant.

Maybe it's just me being grumpy as usual, but if i had £250, I could think of a million better ways to spend it than on a meaningless plate.

With £250 you could:

Swap and insure (probably) a 1.2 litre engine conversion if you owned a cinq sporting.

I want for very little so none of this is personanally for me, £250 for me would just sit in my bank for a rainy day right now:

A nice new hifi
A very nice DVD TV recorder and a number of DVDs
A digital camcorder (well, nearly!)
A GPS system
Thousands of jaffa cakes (Ok, so personal to me )
A quarter of there abouts of a my tutition fees
20 odd weeks of petrol for me
etc. etc.

I see what Paul is saying but plates are a big part of the look of your car and if you want to personalise your car it's the easiest way to do it (no insurace increases+no exterior mods). Being personal doesn't mean it has to read/express something.

Paul, I might have agreed with you in the past, but I'd quite like a personal plate now. £250 may be a lot of cash to you as you're a student, but most of us here work and that really isn't a lot of money. The resaon I'd like a plate is that I could hang on to it and every car I own will have the same reg.
