I have been offered a 42k Punto 1.2 8v SPI engine without gearbox for £100. Will it fit my 1108 gearbox? Is it worth the hassle? Anything I should watch out for while fitting it? Anyone advise an optimum inlet/exhaust combination?

Thanks[8)]

yes it'll fit, its worth the hassle from what i hear, if you dont want it send it my way lol! :p

Quite a few people on the forum got 1242 conversions. someone will be able to help with other q's.

in reference to is it worth it again; its only 4bhp more i think on paper, but you get bags more torque with it :D

Nicked from Webcento.co.uk

This is written by John Brearley, he was the first to do this and is an engineer by trade so everything belows 100% true.
Superchips not needed but recommended.

Summary of changes made:

1) 1242cc 8 valve engine 2.5k miles out of a 1999 Punto,(complete).

2) Superchip to match the 1242 engine, fitted to the 1108 ECU,(pluggerble).

3) K+N airfilter.

4) 70mm dia stainless steel exhaust system (no cat, could be fitted when needed)

5) O-60 8.3 secs, top speed 110 mph, bhp 85 (estimated)

What had to be done:

* The Punto cam belt cover has to be used because the 1242cc block is 10 mm taller, this leads to contact between the top of the cover and the water return pipe from the carb to the header tank. This is easy to correct by routing the pipe below the header tank with a longer pipe.

* The Seicento oil pressure switch which is bent to 90 degrees has to be used because the Punto one which is straight comes into contact with the inner driverside wing.

* The Seicento crankshaft position sensor on the front cam case has to be used, due to the Punto cam belt cover "pluging" the Punto one in "on top of the cover" increasing the problem of the cover hitting the header tank as in the point one above.

* The Punto down pipe has to be welded to the Seicento Flexable joint due to the fact that engine is 10 mm taller, the Seicento pipe is 10 mm too short in bolting to the Punto manifold.

* The 1108 ECU has to be used because of two reasons the first is the key code chip, and the second the Seicento engine bay loom has to be used. The Punto loom puts the ECU on the drivers side for one example, but there are many other reasons, this leads to a different ECU set up, belive me I've tried !

* Superchips can supply a 1242cc programmed chip to fit a 1108cc ECU, this is what I have, it works just fine, and is plugable for retro fitting the 1108 chip at a later date.(the 1242cc engine will run on the 1108cc chip until you can get the swop done).

* The Seicento Altenator bracket has to be used.

* I have in my conversion used a catless system and a K+N air filter.

* The Punto 1242 ECU as been sent to Camco 88 in Warrington, for four reasons

a) A new key code chip because there were no keys for the written off Punto to match the ECU. This will then match my Siecento keys after the first use and only that thereafter.

b) A "plugable" socket for the engine managment chip as the original chip is mounted onto the PCB.

c) A "Superchip" to match the 1242 Punto engine, which I can replace with either stock 1100cc chip or stock 1242cc or a.n.other. at will, now I have a plugable socket !

d) Plus the whole unit will be checked and tested. All this cost £350.

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!
