Hi All,
I felt like sharing as we were so close to selling our 1995 Cinq for scrap! Took it to Kwik-Fit for MOT (this was our first mistake!) and it failed with a great long list of items including rot, loose sun visor (lol) missing CAT, O2 sensors etc. Local garage quoted £750 for all the welding and then we had to look at all the other parts. Anyway, by chance, I took my mate to pickup his old (well, 2001) VM Camper Bus from a VW Specialist in Barry that just had a load of welding done at a very reasonable price, so I asked if he'd be willing to give me a second opinion. Anyway a couple of hundred quid later, all welding done and re-tested and passed! Turns out it didn't need a CAT due to age and apart from a corroded break pipe, which he sorted, he said Kwik-Fit were being too harsh on it. Granted, there is still some corrosion and advisories but structure not significantly weekend so we can address those before the next one. Just goes to show, a decent mechanic with many years of experience are worth hunting down and good ones do not rip you off. To say we are thrilled is an under-statement. He is happy to stick with VWs and he doesn't want to see another Italian car in a while though lol!
