Recently I noticed my O/S rear bumper bracket was badly corroded and upon inspection it literally turned to dust, a victim of metal cancer.

I have still been meaning to get around to tidying up the underseal on the car and this was the final straw. So at the weekend I got a spray can of Hammerite Underseal from Halfrauds for £5.99, 600ml, I don’t know how much of the underside it will cover. I’ll see how I get on.

This morning I remembered about the bumper brackets but had left the post it with the part numbers etc on it at home. No problem though because I use Desira parts in Norfolk for the non-urgent items. A call to them gets you a competent person on the line who knows what your looking for. So for reference the brackets are £5.90 for the O/S one and £8.50 for the N/S. The N/S is more expensive because it has the rear exhaust hanger attached to it.

So when I get these parts I’ll get the car up, brackets off (considering the rust this’ll be fun and games!) and begin tarting up the underside. I’ll try my best to get pics as well to update the thread.

Cheers

..I got a set of these from Fiat the other month, still ain't got round to fitting them, but my car could do with it, think me bumper mounts are loose from when I got the Abarth rear fitted. Let us know how the underseal goes fella, thanks

liam desira aint doin to well my dads one of the senior mechs there and theyre trying to lay people off. he thinks theyre goin down the pan... oh well (n) (totally off topic just thought id let ya know)

My bumper brackets r like dust too I bought some new ones from Fiat about a year ago for about £30 and put them aside to fit whenever.
Wen I got the car resprayed I had told garage to replace brackets with new ones and they said leave them in the boot and we'll do it. When to the shelf where the brackets were and they had gone - hunted high n low for them and couldn't find so bodyshop had to respray car with rear bumper still on because if they took it off that would have been it!!!! Had to buy more from Fiat and they are now sitting on my shelf ready to fit whenever - they'd better not go walkies too.

I'd do them myself but I'll prob break something knowing me! If u do urs let me know how easy/hard it is.

Ha!

I started off replacing mine & re-undersealing two years ago. It eventually came out of the garage with a new engine!

Whatever you do don't be tempted to "just quickly take the subframe off" to fix the rust underneath, for that is the path of the garage-dweller

Hey folks,

Following Monday's ordering spree my brackets and the nuts and bolts to go with it arrived.

With poastage that was only £2.50 it came to £30 all in, 4 screws to follow but they won't be long.

Word of warning, in he piture below, the N/S bracket has an exhaust hanger and rear towing eye on it, now given the state of most of the owners here brackets I'd say attempting to tow or pulling the rear of the Cinq could rip the bumper off if the bracket is weak, beware!

OK, part one of many in the bumper saga!

The remaining nuts had arrived so I decided to tackle the brackets tonight.

Here’s a pics of the brackets again with all the nuts and bolts that attach them.

And some underseal! (£5.99 from Halfrauds for 600ml)

I got the car jacked up (is it ok to support it on the rear beam?) and on stands and removed the two rear wheels and this was my view

I think the NS gains some protection from the exhaust being in the line of the spray.

So tried the OS first, sockets wouldn’t go on, they are 13mm but I went down to 11mm each time hammering them on but the rust is so bad I couldn’t get a grip.

Tried the drill but it was taking ages so cracked out the grinder, I forgot how many sparks come off that thing!

So some grinding later the bracket came off but left the bolts in the threads, this incidently was how the bracket looked afterwards

This is what the bracket bolts onto

And these were the mountings left once the bracket fell away

Note that using the grinder on the bumper bolt meant the heat was transferred and it began to melt the bumper so be careful.

So it wasn’t as easy as I first thought, only took the OS off and work is halted because I need to figure a way of getting the remainder of the bolts out of the chassis, anyone help me? I’ve got the rest off no probs.

Cheers

Thanks D,

Update! After I took those pics I nipped the tops off with the grinder and had a go drilling them so the is nowt to catch with my Vise grips.

good thread Liam. My tow-eye bracket came off 12 months ago. I should really look at sorting it out

@ Sie, thanks, just trying to give a little input to the section since I've learned a fair bit from it.

@ rallycinq, I ordered a EZ Out Stud Extractor today to get them out, from here

http://www.classic-car-accessories.co.uk/acatalog/

Should be the ticket hopefully.

@ LRD, that was only last night, couldn't get the two studs out so I'm driving minus that side at the mo' but since the state of it originally it shouldn't be that bad.

Everyone should check theres, I think that's why the bumper sags around where it meets the shell.

Would you mind doing a short write up for Centochat too, please? I'd be most grateful :D Seems like this is a common repair and an article as to how to repair would be excellent.

Cheers

Liam, you're a star! cheers mate :worship:

Yeah, send Rob a quick e-mail. Depending on when you can get it done by, might be featured in the Summer Centochat. Deadline is next Tuesday IIRC :)
