Unhappy Is the check engine message something to worry about?

Hi all,

Got the check engine message flashing up on my dash this morning on the way into work, is this something to worry about?

It's not the most user friendly message... why can't it read something like 'check engine: error code xxxx' or maybe I've been dealing for PC problems for to long now.

Would you rather it said "Your car has crashed - fatal error at 1ex0502954exx and will be shut down"?
