Technical Bigger Engine

tbh you are far better off selling the 1.2 and getting a 1.8. A 1.8 conversion will cost 2-3 times as much to insure and if you get a HLX you'll have all the goodie too.

Unless it's a 20VT conversion I really wouldn't bother.

Depends if your 1.2 has gone capoooot!

The insurance can be got right down depending on age and other factors, ie a 2.9 V6 24v Sierra transplant, 1st quote £900 final £406.

You'd need almost a whole donor car if you want it to be drivable, ie obviously engine, looom, gearbox, ecu also brakes (discs fnt and rear) exhaust.

i have got the full car. reason for conversion is my 1.2 has no guts.

what are you talking about i dont have a hgt............muppet

No but Mountain Machine does and I think that a newbie should learn how to use the forum before calling someone a muppet.

With that attitude you wont get very far.

fix the 1.8 then

Take it its a wreck and your 80sx is mint? Is it a mk1 or mk2 1.8 (what year), is it an HLX?

When you say the 1.2 has no guts, your right to a point, it a superb engine for what it is just needs a different driving style to a higher powered car to get the most from it and to keep speed up etc.

Andy_sx has done some great things to his 80sx to get more acceleration etc, and even completely changed most of the trim etc.

The 1.8 is a great engine from what i hear, and if you have one sitting then you may as well give it a bang if thats what floats your boat. If i was going to the trouble i'd whack in a 20v or a 20vt or a lancia engine. OK so sourcing gona be tricky. But think about the power!

main problems are

-the difference in wiring due to sensor differences (well entire engine management differences really)
you will need to compare the ecu's wiring diagram on the 1.8, and the 1.2, and then create a new diagram that will allow you to connect the 1.8 ecu and it connector to the 1.2's wiring. at the other end of each wire you'll need to chop the connector off and fir the 1.8 connector, adapting the wire positions and laying new wires as required. there are huge differences between the 1.2 and 1.8 in this area. it is easy enough if you're fond of making wiring diagram translation tables.

-the fiat code system immob means the 1.8 engine's ecu is permanently paired to the 1.8's immob (and hence code box and red key), and that is an exclusive 1:1 relationship. you need all the matching parts from the 1.8, if you dont then you'll need to get an ecu, codebox and red key from another donor car (must be a matching set)

from the 1.8 you will need at least:

engine
gearbox
driveshafts
exhaust
ecu
wiring loom (or at least the connectors)
immob ecu (aka code box)
red key (at least the code chip from it which matches the codebox)

the time and effort required to do this should not be underestimated. replacing an engine "like for like" is very easy if you have workshop facilities. doing a conversion like this is never easy, and never cheap. if you can do it yourself, and you dont need the car on the road for a few weeks, then go for it, it will be fun and you'll learn a lot. otherwise you'll spend a lot of money, certainly more than it would cost to buy a 1.8, plus you'll still have a lot of spec missing (e.g. the HLX brakes, and improved power steering) so you'll have spent more money for a worse car (unless you change all the spec over), and thats not very clever.

get a 1.8 for cheap, and use the 1.8 you have to supply any spares you need. sell your 1.2 to pay for the 1.8. this is the easiest, best and cheapest way to go about it, unless you want to do the conversion for personal satisfaction and to learn.

i'd go with the rest, if your gunna do it go BIG, 20vT all the way.

sometimes i feel my 2.0 20v is pretty gutless..... i'm sure the people i've left for dirt would disagree.

I WANT A SODDING TURBO!

As someone who has gone from a 20v to a 20vt and who still has both cars. I would say the 20v is a very quick motor. However once you step out the turbo and back into the N/A it feels slow. Its as though the N/A doesn't want to rev. The turbo feels identical to the 20v below 3k then the turbo kicks in and it's like the engine has gone, here have another 70 plus bhp and a bucket full of torque. The steering wheel twitches and if in 1st the tyres will spin up. in the wet they will spin up in 3rd :D The turbo makes the rev counter shoot round as though you are riding the clutch and the horizon starts accelerating towards you. (y)
