Technical remote key programming

There is no need to try putting in the new 4 digit code, because the unit does not know it yet!
Put in the old known code to open receiver, and allow system to settle.
Hold in the button on receiver and hold pushed the button on the new remote.
Eventually the green led on receiver will stay on.
release button on remote and receiver.
New remote will now work. The receiver now has the new keys code installed which can be used to unlock receiver in future.

I keep getting the LED stay on for ten seconds, i.e. I've supposedly input the code wrongly. I've definitely input it correctly.
correctly yes, but you used the wrong code! you must use an existing code, existing means a code froma remote that is currently paired with the car, and obviously your new remote isnt.

so use either of the old codes and it will work. after that, next time you can use the new code.

Ready4bed and Jug,
Wow, what can I say?! You folks are fantastic - very many thanks! You're absolutely spot on - I wasn't expecting a reply anything like this quick, let alone two!
I've just done what you both said and confirm to everyone else it's 100% right. Entering either of the original 4 digit codes via the button near then courtesy light "unlocked" the system, then the new key could be learnt - as easy as holding the courtesy light button then pressing the new key button. After hours of fiddling, I was gobsmacked when the new key finally locked the car!
I was very confused by using old codes and pressing the button on a new key. I can see the logic now - entering the old code has nothing to do with the new key, I guess it just proves to the car that I'm not some passer-by programming their own key to the car.
By the way, I read somewhere on this site (sorry, I read for hours and can't find it now) that the alarm remote coding has to be done before the immobiliser coding - I confirm it can be done the other way around as I've just programmed the alarm remote but haven't done the immobiliser bit yet. Having spent £60 on a new key from a Fiat dealer, I didn't want to get it cut straight away in case it was somehow the wrong type of key. Wasn't til I came on this site looking for help that I found out Timpsons etc do much cheaper versions - ho hum.

the immob and alarm are completely seperate systems so it doesn't matter which you do first, or if you even do both.

Hi all. just replaced the batteries in my key. This morning pressed the key button and the car unlocked. Went to lock the car with the key button and nothing. had to drive to the shop to get new batteries with the alarm going!. Now i replaced the batteries and still no joy no little red light shows up on the key. Tried the other blue key and the same thing. Am i just unlucky to have two dodgy keys or is there something i am missing?

Check you put batteries in the correct way round,-
+ sign into holder
- sign to circuit board.
Make sure contact behind battery has enough spring in it.
Check that pcb fits snuggly in its space.
If red LED flashes, but no responce from dash green LED, then remote has got out of sync.

cheers for your reply but i have tried all that i even put a bit of silver foil on the contact in the holder. when i had bought the batteries and they didnt work i took the batteries back to the shop and got them changed, still no luck. i have made sure that the little switch in each key is sound i have changed the pcb from one key to the other. still nothing. Dont know what to try now...
But i will get some other batteries from somewhere else you never know might be a bad batch (hoping!)

you need to use 2 batteries, both are CR2016. you need to make sure the sprung earth pin in the corner is clean and touching the side of the battery. i always scratch both the contacts with the key until they are shiney.

Have done. got two new batteries for each today. both have shiney contacts and both have the little switch intact i cant understand it...

the green led near the sunroof does not light when i press either key. The red led near the heater controls is flashing all the time. Strange that yesterday when the remote failed i unlocked the car manually and the alarm would sound. Now it doesnt but the red led is still going for it! :bang:

Sounds like your key fobs are ok if they are flashing red, the little unit in the ceiling light seems to have forgotten your code for that particular key.

I've not read the whole post but have you tried your other blue key and see if it works. I assume that the other key still works to rule out a faulty unit in the ceiling light that grabs the code for the rcl/alarm.

The red leds in the keys are not working (both keys) The green led in the car works when i press the button next to it and the red led in the dash is flashing constantly. i reckon the pcb's are broke..

The switch on the PCB tends to break off, so i would try to resolder the switch back on before you go replacing the keys. As mine broke off and the red light on the key did not work. Resoldered the switch and all was good again.

In the red circle is the microswitch there are 4 solder points on it. There is a good chance it will be one of these points that is broken and needs fixing.

Have you actually checked they're ok or just visually inspected??? All it takes is for one joint to break. What i would do is get the side of the fob that has the batterys, put them in place, put the PCB on top, don't refit the other half, press down on the microswitch and if possible press the button on the microswitch to rule out a faulty PCB.

Ok.. i have visually inspected the joints and they seem sound, even got a magnifying glass! and i have also tried what you suggested. Apart from putting a few blobs of solder on the contacts i dont know what else to try.
