Connecting Rod Removal

how can i remove the rods from pistons? because mine aren't with pin clips, i know that a machine shop uses a press to get the pins out,and then heats the rod's end and places the pin (at least this is what I've read/saw on the net),but is there a way i can do this myself and save up some money ?
