Hi guys n gals!

I've discovered an oil leak on the 1.2 Brava i have, but not sure where its coming from, i'll do my best to describe it!

got under the car yesterday as i'd noticed a few small oil stains on the drive ( i intially thought they might have been from a 147 i owned as she had a small leak from her sump plug when cold) but they do seem to be coming from the Brava. Theres a few drops of oil seem to gather on the front of the oil sump, i thought it might be coming from maybe the oil filter not being put on properly, but she's dry there, any ideas on where it might be coming from. She doesn't seem to be losing alot of oil as she's full to the brim with the stuff.

Actually on the point of her being full to the brim, i'm finding it hard to get a reading of how much oil is in it as the dip stick always seems to read above the max line (but because its new oil its hard to tell), could the car have been over filed by the garage?? I kinda rememeber from owing a Brava 8 years ago that it wasn't easy to get an accurate reading of the oil level back then either!

Could the possible over-fill & the leak be connected??

Check your clutch slave cylinder for leaks (under the battery).

I thought I had an oil leak - turned out to be brake / clutch fluid. First I knew about it was the handbrake light staying on. Check the brake fluid reservoir level (does brake and clutch) for loss of fluid.

i can agree with you that getting an accurate reading is abit hard. i find one side is always higher the the other on the dipstick. i was near minimum the other day an topped it up with some random stuff.

but changing oil today so i will know exactly.

thanks guys. i went to our local Halfords & bought Gunk to remove all the old excess oil from around the outside of the sump, there was alot, maybe a very sloppy oil change... but my reasons behind cleaning the underneath of the engine was so i could easily see where any oil was coming from. Well i cleaned it a few hours ago & started her up, left her running for a bit, gave her a bit of revs & no leak! So i'm wondering is it possible the oil drops i saw coming down from the front of the sump (ie not near the plug) was literally where an old oil spill wasn't cleaned up properly & the droplets were due to the fact that when the engine got warm the old oil became a luquid & nature & the law of gravity took its course?? As she's as dry as a bone underneath now!

ps, for anyone who wants to clean an engine, Gunk is fantastic stuff! Much better than any engine cleaner i've used before!

are u sure it came from engine, not gearbox? so from gearbox it could run out only, when running (at turns or something like that) and in ur case, maybe, when u stopped the car, it just droped, what was ON the engine from driving. So i recommend u to look carefully for at least few days.

Not a expert, just thought it could be tha case.

thanks for that Stroke, its funny you should mention the gear box, i left the car for a few hours, went back to check on the sump, & noticed a bit of oil on the gear box, i don't think i noticed it before but its hard to say.

how do i check the level of the gear box oil, when i get the car home tomorrow night i'll gunk the gear box & see if there are any signs of leaks over the next few days. Are potential leaks from the gear box hard to fix???

well in most cases i belive yeah, depends on where it leaks (between engine = alot of work coz probably have to remove the gearbox etc. with other stuff i cant tell, but might just be hard as well. )

i THINK u can check oil level just by opening the screw (HEX) that is ment for filling gearbox with oil, and it shuld be full to the opening = if u have more it will run out. so basically put your finger in and feel how low it is. ofc engine shuld not run  .

btw if u have leak for long time, it sometime cleans its way of witch it runs off ;), so if u have a cleaner line from somewhere u probably might assume oil is running there . Dont have "that" car so cant tell u anything for sure, but few pictures would help maybe? at least if someone that has experience looks at them:slayer:
