Hi a few weeks back i had a straight drag with my mate we both have Bravo HGT's on R plates and both have 147 engines my mate always had the edge on me until my engine decided to go upto heaven (piston gone). My engine had done 124000 my mates has done 81000 after fitting a new engine in mine that has done 82000 it felt alot stronger than my old engine so last night when we finished work we had the straight drag again and guess what he had me again and again and again on the last race we swapped cars and his still beat mine. The cars are the same how is this possible?

was the new engine serviced properly when fitted?

by how much is the other car getting ahead?

Dirty MAF sensors can cause quite dramatic powerloss and i would guess this hasnt been changed between the old and new engines.

Hi yes both cars are the same apart mine has 205/50/r15 tyres on and mate has 195/55/r15 as to the engine i had to put all my aucillaries on it i.e injection unit, alternater and everything else. The other problem i had was that when my engine blew all the oil went up into everything like throttle body air filter more a less where they was a pipe or space it filled with oil i clean it all out but possibly there could be more.

Oh and it gets a full car length ahead then slowly pulls away

your tyres are 1.68% smaller than your friends, thats not really enough to cause a big issue.

it may well be your Maf that is slowing you down a little, they can be cleaned but you must be very careful and NEVER touch the sensor with anything.

if you choose to try and clean it you will need to use alcohol based areosol, i use Wynns carb & injection cleaner, give it a good spray to remove any dirt and dont get it on any paint work (do it well away from the car) as it melts paint :)

Hi Ry thanks for that that is a job for tomorrow i also remembered tonight that i had just filled up my tank to the brim and his only had a fiver of petty in it. Cheers Craig

amount of fuel wont make the difference you describe.. Agree that the MAF sensor is well worth a look and will effect low gear acceleration more as you use higher revs. Also that some of your injection components are from a higher mileage car.

if your last engine was knackered then maybe your ecu might have tried to compensate. it might be re learning new parameters.

good point and might just do the trick, but its not solving what might be a component that is worn. although I still stand by that some engines are better than others. some from factory and some just the way they have been driven and treated. Some engines will free up and re-learn.

buy a coupe turbo or 20vt engine etc etc and leave him for dust :)

Ok further to my last post i have been racking my brain as to why my mates bravo hgt 147 engine is more powerfull than mine both cars have no mods all original and after having ago of his bravo again today i noticed that when pulling off you get pushed back into the seat and when change gear it nearly snaps your head off where as mine doesn't seem to have that affect.
Could it be down to the exhaust when i got my car it had the original exhaust on it the same one that his has now but after a few days i noticed that it was blowing all over so i got a new off the internet from a company that makes exhaust (not original fiat) and after thinking about it my car had the same power as his when it had original exhaust on it. So could this be why.

Hi guy's and girls. I noticed last night that my exhaust manifold is blowing had a look this morning and on it's flat surface it has a bit of curosion at one spot and it is blowing. Instead of buying a new manifold is there anyway that it can be repaired or is there anything that can be used to fill it in.

This leak is most likely throwing the lambda readings out. hence your performance issues.
Due to the pressure, welding which is totally depending on how or where it is cracked is the only repair solution.

otherwise renewal.

I noticed that when i start it up from cold you can realy hear it blowing or put my foot down. On the gasket surface there is some rusting and it is raised so when it is bolted down it is not making a good seal. Was thinking of grinding it flat ans for the pitted part putting some of Evo-stik Hard & Fast Metal Epoxy Putty from halfords and fileing it flat. What you think.

when i first had my hgt it was not bad on performance then i realised the manifold down pipe was blowing so i put a new one on and could not belive a little thing like that was stopping the performance

You could have the manifold machined. Or if competant as i'm sure you are file the rust off gently. Does it look like its warped on the surface?

would not use any filler it will blow out, too much pressure. It might fix short term though.
