hi i have a 1999 2.0 HGT 155

the battery went flat.. and has been off the road for a while, now the car wont lock? the ignition is knackered and i need a new one.. but i cant start the car?

Even if you push the locks down manually.. they dont go down.. when i put the key in and turn.. the key will snap before the locks turn. is this to do with the ignition?

Is this to do with the central locking? anyone ever hads this problem?

Also what colour paint code is the fiat yellow? are there several?

and is it possible to take the door handles off? keeping the locks the same?

Both my handles are knackered and want to get some from the scrappies and change them over.. but how do you do this?

Also changing the alternator belt... what do you need to remove to get to it? just jack the car up and take drivers wheel off?

Lots of questions i know...

thanks

hi :)

you can reomve the handles easily. finding some good condition replacements is the hard part. there is one nut inside the door (10mm i think) and one bolt on the side of the door (torx head). thejn you can move the handle away from the door. then you will see 2 rods, they can be popped off the handle. now the handle can be removed. to reomve the lock barrle from the halde there is a single circlip that you need to pull off to release the lock barrel. refitting is a reversal. it can be a fiddly job from start to finish so practice on the scrapyard donor car before you attakc your own car.

the paint code is on a sticker on the side of tailgate.

if your model does not have air con then removing the auxilliary drive belt is very easy, all you need to do is use a spanner to lever the tenisoner, this releasen the tenison allowing you to slip the belt off. if you have air con then you need firstly need to remove the engine mount above the belt, which can be removed safely without supporting the engine.

your central locking problem is strange, are you sure you're using the correct key? since it wont turn in the ignition barrel or the door barrels it strongly suggests the key does not fit. since its an HGT it should have remote central locking, does either remote key work?

you can only push the locks down manually if all the doors are closed. sit in the car and try locking it from the inside with all doors closed.

Thanks. im new here by the way. cheers for the helpful info.

Only had the car a week, i only have one blue key.. so i should have central locking... that expalins it..

and i didnt want to try to lock it with the door shut in case i couldnt get out!

The blue key will start the car.. and sorry, it does turn the ignition, but the igntions snapped off. I can start it with the key near the code sensor and a screwdriver in the ignition bit.

Is it gona be possible to get a replacement red key? and ideas of cost? contact fiat?

ill get a window open then try the locking with the doors shut tonight.. cheers, just need to worry about key.. can you get replacement central locking keys? think the chip in the blue key is ok, as the code sensor goes off when it present.

you cant get a red key. if you ask your locla fiat dealer they can get you one for about £1000. the only way to do it yourself is to replace the ecu, codebox & keys taking all those parts from a single donor car.
there is no good reason to bother doing that because you will very probably never need the red key.

then again, since your ignition switch is damaged and your key will not fit the door locks maybe it would be a good idea to get a full set of locks, keys, ecu and codebox from a donor car and fit them to your car.

if the remote central locking is not working it may mean your remote is broken. that can usually be fixed by simply soldering the switch back in place, a very easy 1 minute job. you know its broken if the red light on the key does not flash when you hold the button. flat batteries can also cause it.
