Hi I seem to have a starnge problem with my car(Fiat Brava 1.6 SX 4 speed Auto, 1998), this happens when the gear stick is in the D mode on crossing over 40 Miles per hour and then reducig the speed i Automatic gearbox indicator starts blinking and it goes off when i restart the car

Thanks in Advance

I've got a similar model as yours. And a similar problem as well.

When the gear lever is engaged in "D" the indicator will start blinking when the box reaches 4th gear or overdrive.

What's more, it also doens't down shift automatically.

If I am running on 3rd all the way, no problem what so ever.

Kindly advise.

I have had this problem a number of times over the last few years (from the 6th year of owning car onwards).

Last year I managed to solve it by having the RPM sensors changed. It didn't cost much (about EURO200 equiv. approx.), and the gearbox ran well for about a year.

The problem surfaced again now (car in the 10th year), and I am half thinking of either bringing the car in again for similar repair, or to just have the auto gearbox completely converted to manual.

The gearbox behaviour and light still comes on as described in the first post above now, and I have been driving the auto gearbox like a manual for the last few weeks. It will forcefully transition into 4th gear once the engine in warm enough, and the car will ride normally by turning off the engine and restarting the car.

If light is comming on then it is reasonable to diagnose with FIAT tester. It should show where the problem is, but before buying anythink be sure that problem is not on the wiring.
