Just a quick question, how is this done lol. i am looking into making a few mods on my Punto mk2 and i have seen a few cars with the front and rear bumpers smoothed and i think it looks really good. Could this be a DIY job or should it be done by a specialist ? (y)

Can do the smoothing DIY but needs to be sprayed by a pro. Depends how confident you are and if you thing you can smooth them well yourself.

not really that confident in doing it, if it was easy enough i would but i really dont have a clue about it. Its just i dont really know anywhere in Glasgow that deals with stuff like this. just need to keep on looking and hope for the best.

To be honest (as someone who sprays) the difference between a good spray job and a bad one is the preperation. Spray will not cover any imperfection it will highlight it.
However, just to clarify as I think what punto_matt is saying I suppose you could remove the bumpers and begin to prep doing all the time consuming jobs then getting the sprayer to finish them off with sanding tools etc unless you have done a 1st class job and spray them in with a gun.

Thanks for the advice, i think i am just going to try and find a body shop to do the work for me, i have no idea how it is done so best just to leave it to someone who knows the trade. again thanks for the help guys i apreciate it all (y).

have a go at it mate, how do u expect to learn anything unless u try lol. people that work in bodyshops only got there by practicing how 2 do things, do wot u can do & if u dont feel like ur doing it right take it in2 the bodyshop as a last resort. will save u a bit of money by doing it urself aswell ;)

Finished result will be worse.

Why attempt to bodge a mod on your most expensive possession?

Pro's are in business for a reason.

not "bodgeing" its learning mate. u say pros are in business for a reason but how did them pros get there, with practice. i agree with the bloke above me about practicing on a bumper from scrappy.

I could practice brain surgery for weeks but it does not mean i'd be any good at it.

Its not just practice, pro's have learnt info on what techniques to use etc etc and what materials to use. Not only that there are lots of different tools.

I offer this advice as I am partially self taught but then worked with a pro read loads of books-info and learnt a lot that I wish i'd known in the first place.

I do agree though that its a good idea if you want a project to try it on an old bumper 1st.
:)

Can't compare smoothing off to brain surgery :O

True. ;) :D
but a lot of jobs on paper are not difficult, until you try them.
Building a wall,
plastering,
Teaching,
professional footballer
etc.
skill is through being taught and practice, add in the fact that some are more gifted than others. To add perfection through practice is not obtained from 1 bumper.
