Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

bit of an update, car is now taxed and insured, so I have just been out for a 10 minute drive, car seems to run fine, still not taken it over 2500 rpm though! THe only issue is a squeak squeak that comes from the left hand side of the engine. It sounds like a bearing - alternator or water pump type noise. Its not the alternator as the noise remains when i take off the auxilary belt. I plan to spend some more time diagnosing the squeak before taking it out for a long hard run, the water pump did feel fine when I had it off the head, and turned smoothly and no wobble so I am pretty happy it is not that. It doesnt sound like it is coming from high enough up to be the cams or anything in the head so the only thing left really is the cam belt tensioners (although these were replaced with genuine new fiat items). I will take the cam cover off at the weekend and see what I can find - although it takes me ages to get that bloody wheel arch protector off!

I have the same thing on my Barchetta, I think it could be the fixed cam tensioner.

Doc - any solution other than replace (it is brand new!) I was going to see if spraying it in WD40 would make any difference (obviously not getting any on the belt).

For other squeeky and possibly belt noises I have used a very light spay of "Wet Start". For example on an auxilary belt a very light mist of the belt contact surface will, if it is a belt to pulley rubbing squeek, normally result in a sudden quietness.

I've not ever tried this on a cam belt but could be tempted as an absolute last resort.

WD40 is way to oily for ANY belt contact. Wet Start is more of an almost oil free water dispersant but does have excellent lubricant style qualities.

You can always spray a little Wet Start on your gives and feel how quickly it lubricates and then dissapears with minimal oily residue.

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

Thanks for the reply Nick, the squeak is not a belt slip type noise, more like a bearing noise, I was wondering if the bearing may need lubricating but it must be sealed so dont know if penetrating fluid could get in....

I will try when I have time to take the wheel arch cover out - its a bugger to get out!

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

When i changed my cambelt six months ago the only tensioner I kept was the metal fixed one but you say yours is new so I guess it cant be that then. I might try putting a bit of water on the cambelt to see if that stops the noise for a min or so. I cant think of anything else that makes that kind of noise so its a bit of a strange one. My Barchetta engine runs spot on so no issues apart from the noise.

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

Doc, I plan to get a shot tonight and have a look. The noise was not there before all my problems started and doesnt seem to be coming from the top end. I have the old fixed tensioner so I will put that back on and see if the noise goes away. I must say, I rang shop4parts yesterday just to ask if they had any returns of their tensioner kits lately and they seemed genuinly concerned that it may be faulty and immediately offered to send a new on in the post. I told them to hold off till I did some more investigations but I was very much suprised at such an attitude which was not "oh you fitted it wrong" or some other excuse, just a desire to rectify any possible problem.

Glad you got it going . Have you got a mechanics stephoscope? They only cost about £5 on ebay, there great for locating noisey bearings etc.

Try a listening stick - crude, but works remarkably well. Use a bit of wood such as a dowel rod pressed onto a part of the car and held against your ear.

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

I cant do it, just cant! been out driving tonight and the thought of jacking it back up, taking the wheel arch cover off, then the cam cover etc....... I would rather drive it!! I am going to take a look on Saturday morning when the wife is at work.

Got it to 4000 rpm today and no nasty noises, seems fine. Only problem is temperature - there is a thermostat in, I checked when I had the head off but the car doesnt seem to warm up! The gauge will go to about 60degC but no higher.

Also, anyone know how to change the dashboard bulbs (especitally the speedo bulb).

Ta

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

Where's 60°C on the gauge? (Can't remember off the top of my head). Mine usually stays at about 8-8:30 o'clock.

The bulbs on the speedo are easy to change; undo two screws on the front of the speedo cluster, pull it halfway out, unplug 2-3 cables, and hey presto.

Edit: Just remembered; you need to remove some plastic from the steering column too.

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

If it's only getting up to 60'c you have the same problem mine had - the thermostat's nackered. Problem is they are huge, have four pipes and one sender on them and cost £35+!

Robot - 60'c is just off the bottom mark on the temp gauge. If yours points to 8:30 that's wierd, mine points more like 3:00 when warmed up

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

Ahh so you have to change the whole unit, not just the thermostat element. Is this sticking open a common thing?? I will take a look at the cam belt tensioners this weekend and if one needs replacing, I can have them send a thermostat at the same time.

Re: Roll up Roll up, place your bets!

Yeah, you have to change the whole casting. It's the same 'stat my Alfa 156 had, and that failed in exactly the same way.

For me, if you suspect the water pump might be the squeak, why not change it when you have the coolant drained for the thermostat change?
