Hello,

I bought few days ago used 500x. It's 2017, 1.4 MultiAir@170HP and it has 68000km on the clock.

It's 9 gear automatic gearbox, and I noticed only when it's traffic jam and car is moving slow, and when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear you can feel the jerk. If I drive faster it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear smoothly. All other shifts are smooth and completely normal.

I visited dealer today and they said it's completely normal for Fiat and those kind of transmissions. They are not perfect, but it definitely won't lead to bigger problem in future.

I would appreciate if I can hear your opinion, and if someone noticed same thing.

Cheers,
Alex

I find that I get occasionally jerky changes, whilst travelling at low speed, or low throttle openings. This is made worse in Sport mode. I don't regard it as a fault, 99% of the time the box changes smoothly. I always find that when it happens there is almost always something to explain it.

Thanks man. But if this is normal, than I would say those automatic transmissions are not that good :)

As I understand it the same box is fitted to several 'prestige' makes so I guess the box itself is sound, but I don't know who is responsible for the software. Also, in Auto mode it is never bad enough to be a problem, in Sport mode slightly more so, so I'm guessing it's a software quirk. In >50,000 miles I have never felt it was unacceptable. One's own personal driving style will also affect the smoothness of the change as well.

Hi

I havent been on this site for a long time, not sure why a few days ago it just came into my head and I popped by and looked at what was going on here.

I remember Alan and his opening edition 500x from years ago, glad to see he's still here and 50k+ miles in. (He's got the wrong red colour unlike me ;) )

I bought mine (registered late 2016) in Aug 2017 with 11 miles on the clock. 2l 4*4 diesel. In just under 3 years I have now done 11k miles.

I came to this thread in particular because of the comments about the jerky 9 speed auto. My personal experience of this are:

1) It feels worse when starting from cold.

2) 2nd to 3rd is where it is most noticeable, to a lesser degree 3rd to 4th. 1st to 2nd is where it is highly noticeable but as the car in auto mode starts in 2nd its rare this occurs.

3) What makes the 2nd to 3rd jerky change worse is it occurs at around 13mph when the central door locks activate.

4) Not sure if it's a software glitch. Could well be? Feels like it.

5) One more thing I do notice is at around 20mph in 4th gear when taking the foot off the accelerator the car "rides the revs" a bit. i.e rather than revs diminishing they hold at a constant rate. Perhaps I should have questioned this a bit more while still under warranty but the fact is it isn't that bad if you expect it.

The early days of the car were not fault free, the battery died (common), the AC condenser went, and one day I opened the boot and the mechanism fell down into my hand. All fixed under warranty but I'd prefer if they didn't occur. This was after 7 years owning a fault free 500.

Bugbears for me are 2 things:
1) Ride comfort is not quite as smooth as I'd like (on 17'' wheels). I have looked and when I come to changing tyres I could go from 215 to 225 tyres which would increase rolling diameter 1.5%, within legal guidelines. Not sure it will make a lot of difference.

2) Engine noise. I'd like just a bit more soundproofing and would be prepared to pay a reasonable cost for this. My feeling is the engine is noisy but perhaps what lets it down say vs premium german cars is the level of soundproofing is probably a lot lower.

The best thing however is I paid circa half RRP for the car initially, and this has resulted in a beautiful depreciation profile. I reckon if i was to buy my car now I'd be looking at a cost circa 3k less than what I paid for mine, which is a great deal for 35 months of motoring. (£85-£90 per month). As time goes on this average montly depreciation cost will reduce further.

Keep safe all.
