Took my 2017 Cross Plus into my local Fiat Stealer today to have my replacement (from another car) ABS Pump/Sensor reset so the light goes out for the first MoT and was chatting and drooling over the Abarth 500s and had a good look at the new 500X Sport which I have to say is really, really nice.

We talked about the lack of an Abarth and the salesman told me that Abarth have one, just one. They created one as a concept/prototype and although they flatly refuse to produce one for us to buy, there is actually one in existence. I would love to see some pictures of that. I wonder if they will ever sell it?

not enough people would buy it apparently... meanwhile VW made the T-roc R and Mini the Countryman JCW as well as other companies doing the same.

If they actually put a proper engine in the thing rather than some 1.0 litre with a highly strung turbo, then I thing people would buy them, upgrading their 500 abarth to the family car version.

I’m seriously thinking about buying an S

I was in my local dealer the other day and took a good look at a 500X Sport. Looked really good and have to say the fit and finish and quality of the materials used appears to have stepped up. We'll quite possibly be looking for a used one in a year or two once depreciation has hit to replace our Cross Plus.

Had a nosey at a Sport at my local dealer the other day...

Interior is nice with the sporty wheel, pedal trims etc; and it just looks a bit meaner from the front. I didn’t really like the SPORT badge on the front wings, they look a bit heavy handed in big chrome lettering.

For the extra ~2k they were asking over the cross (pre-reg prices) I couldn’t help but feel I’d be underwhelmed by the drive, considering it’s still the 1.0.

Agreed Oggles thats why we're going to wait for a used one. The Sport badges are easily removable :)

They'd definitely have to put the 1.75 engine in it to get a more sporty version. My 2016 Cross Plus with the 170hp engine (which is more than the Sport at 150) isn't what I would describe as quick.

1.4 highly strung turbo with 170hp = low levels of torque, so engine has a harder time getting the car moving and it’s a heavier car than most Fiat’s so not a very respectable 0. - 60 time

The 170bhp 500x has only 184f/lb of torque and weighs 1400kg. 0-60 of about 8.7seconds

My 120bhp Punto diesel 50hp less and only weights 200kg less and has over 250f/lb of torque, with a 0-60 of less around 9 seconds.

So 170hp will feel a lot like a 120hp diesel Punto. These are similar figures to a 1990s family saloon car like a Mondeo.

Something like the Mini Countryman JCW with 300hp will do 0-6 in 5 seconds. That will fee fast compared to most normal cars.

I tuned my 1.4 500X to 200hp en 300 torque. 0-60 time doesn’t increase that much but the 60-100 is time is so much better.
