My 500x has always had the feirce brakes (good - best of any car I have owned) and a fairly fierce clutch (not so good). After 16k miles it seems to have the occasional judder at start-up. Its controllable but my concern is that it is going to fail sometime. Anyone here with similar experience.

I’ve had the same experience but only when it’s cold. In the summer on start up it’s fine, but winter time is juddery for the first 10 mins. Dealership says nothing wrong [emoji849]

It sounds like a gearbox mount issue, whether it be okay (they all do that) or it's knackered.

A new mount might change the characteristics .. or it may make no difference (depending how old/what mileage yours has) but it may be worth a punt, depending on the cost vs. how much it bothers you.

Update: all mountings secure and in good condition. Verdict is that it is most likely not serious. One of the guys who looked at the car has a VW polo himself which has shown the same symptoms from new. General view of the team is that its a symptom of the modern clutch. (As opposed to the old fashioned thrust bearing and 'asbestos' plate type). I have a years dealer warranty remaining so I will just drive on.
