500X teaser and launch date

Hi.

I'm sure a few others have seen this but it looks like fiat have made the 500X official and given it a launch date, Paris 2nd October 2014.

Re: 500X teaser and launch date

Looks good from what I can make out. Dare I say it, more '500' than the 500L. I like the 500L, have driven a few & it's a good car in its own right, but it's more Panda than 500 I feel.

You could be correct in terms of which large version of the FIAT range the L is.

But FIAT are really only latching on to the success of the 500 to market the L and in future the X.

If the Panda had been the sales success of the 500 then I'm pretty sure we would now have a Panda L and a Panda X would be the one coming soon. It is only really a matter of badging after all.

To me FIAT would have been better leaving the 500 as it is, giving the
L a new and separate model identity along with the forthcoming X.

If there is any other FIAT my L reminds me of it's the Multipla TBH. So given it doesn't have the width and the seating arrangement of that model perhaps the
L should really have been the Multipla C (C being for compact).

The seven sweater could then have been the Multipla L (L being for large)

Fair point but surely it's all about capitalising on the 500 brand - just like BMW have with the mini brand.

Public perception of the panda is of a pretty basic runaround and I doubt that many people actually know what a Multipla is or was.

The 500 is the fiat cashcow and they will be milking it dry!

Let's hope the details shown add up to a great car package - if people will buy that awful looking nissan wisheewashee and dread full Vauxawfull Latte the 500x could clean up - apart from the fact it hasn't got a silly name

Is this the replacement for the bravo? Seems to sit in a similar size/class at least looks like it in isolation. It does look a bit more off roady, but the qashqai did after the almera.

It's quoted as replacing the Sedici, but given that hardly anyone bought that in the UK, it'll possibly attract current Bravo owners too, as well as those who own the smaller Fiats (500/Panda/Punto).

There's meant to be an actual Bravo replacement along next year. 3 cheaper than average models (saloon, hatch and estate), built in Turkey to keep costs down. Whether we get any of them in the UK remains to be seen - probably not the saloon I'd imagine, since we don't really buy small saloons much in the UK. A hatch and estate would be nice though.

The 500 is the fiat cashcow and they will be milking it dry!

Fiat have created a confusing branding issue with building a '500' range of cars, from day one the mini was always just a mini, with its own badges dealerships and brand identity, no bmw badges on the cars or in the dealerships

they also build interesting fun cars the standard hatch, then convertibles roadsters coupes and 4x4s (which actually have 4wd) they don't build people carriers

Engine options from small economical everyday runabouts to cooper works 200+bhp engines effectively making any model they sell a hot hatch, and they target young professionals as their main audience

Fiat with the 500 'brand' have confused the issue, you still buy a fiat with a fiat badge the 500 is a cute little retro car small and fun but compared to other companies fairly basic, targeted at young new drivers mostly female very limited engine options and only one hot hatch option which in effect was a different brand again. So it's an 'abarth 500' instead. Then with the launch of the 500L the aim was to turn 500 owners with growing families into fiat brand loyal car owners, except the 500L is boring and no better than the dozens of fat hatchbacks on the market like the scenic/Picasso/verso cars that other brands sell, the difference is a zafira has much in common with a Astra, where as a 500 and a 500L are very different car so there is no sense of buying just a bigger version of a 500. The size and practicality of the 500L does make it ideal for one target market, which is the over 60s who have bought thousands of the things, and turned the 500L into an 'old peoples' car.

So now what do they hope to achieve with yet another 500 model? The L was already supposed to go head to head with the mini countryman so why launch another car to do the same, going head to head in the same market as the 500L
Really all the new car looks like to me is replacement of the punto/bravo but while they piss about with models of 500, punto owners who have been waiting since 2005 for a proper punto replacement are now deserting fiat to buy cars else where fiat are forgetting that the punto has been their most successful car for year after year since for the last 20 years 9 years of which have been variations of the grande.

You don't see ford ditching their fiesta or Renault their Clio to try and push a totally different brand on customers.

The only people who see the 500 brand as a cash cow are fiat and despite their claims the 500L really didn't sell all that well in the UK or US reputation in the US has taken some serious blows, it's only really Italy that has gone mad for the 500L mainly because fiat are as much a part of Italian culture as espresso.

I won't be buying any variation of fiat 500XLCTSR when my current punto reaches the end of its life I plan to look else where as what I really want is another punto, I have a grande at the moment, a 2014 punto is just another grande so I'll have to look else if I want a countryman I will go an buy a countryman. There is a new countryman coming soon and a 4 door mini due out this month so while others do it seems fiat just follow these days

Lots of people I see driving an L look younger than me, and I'm 55, where do you get the over 60's thing from?

From the local dealership who say they are very popular with an much older age group/over 60s than what fiat had intended now although they stated 'over 60s' how accurate that is, is a matter of their opinion and most sold could have been bought by 59 year olds

that said at 55 you're not exactly fiats young family target market so you are kinda proving the point

so with the 500 being most popular with 18 - 30 year old women and the 500L with a much older age group it means they have left them self a huge gap in their line up that was previously filled with the Punto but as stated the Punto is very old now and those updating are looking for something new

You miss one possible big point though.

Our 500L is a brilliant car for for grand parents, which we are lucky enough to be.

Perhaps FIAT found a market all be it one they didn't intend.

We are in Normandy, France at the moment with our L and I can't think of a car better to travel long distances with. It's perfect for doing this, the same as it is carrying our grand daughter Lydia and all her paraphernalia.

We love our 500L, as you can probably tell.

Re: 500X teaser and launch date

My wife and I have a 500L Trekking. I'm 33, and my wife is 29. We actually chose this car having owned a wide range of rival cars over recent years (Peugeot 3008, Renault Grand Scenic, Ford C-Max), because we thought it was more funky than much of the competition.

As a former Sedici owner (which this is really the replacement for)............ and after seeing a few 'guess' paintshop images........... the reality is a little disappointing....

Re: 500X teaser and launch date

Nice try!!

You raise a good point though. The comparison between previous Suzuki and FIAT models I think is pretty relevant.

It will be interesting to see how much the new 500x resembles the S-cross.
