If you press the accelerator ("gas pedal" in americanese) then if you hear a vroom vroom noise then the engine is running.

Should have bought a Diesel that would leave you in no doubt,

Must admit I had a hire car a few years back a small Fiat and
could only tell it was running at the lights by looking at the rev
counter.

You dont get it right guys. It's not attempt of humor. I'm not in america. In information of car there's not Run and Drive. The car is damaged and i have that speedometer photo and that's why i'm asking if it's turned on?

You want to know whether the engine is running so you can decide whether to buy just the engine from a damaged car...?

The gauge is a TFT and I'm not familiar with those.. but I think when the engine is running, the gradations on the left (between the numbers) should illuminate.

There's also no temperature indication....

So I would say the ignition is "on" (you can see there's a warning of no fuel in the car) but the engine does not appear to be running.

If the seller says the engine works, get them to video starting it. Everyone has a camera phone these days. But if the car was crashed, as my old late Mechanic Doctor Death used to say, the engine was running alright when it hit the tree... :D

Maybe if you explained what you wanted to know, rhather than a photo of a speedo and ask if the "engine is on", then you'd get a better reply.

If you had said you are trying to buy a dodgy write-off on the internet and need to know if the engine is running in the photo, then people would probably have told you to not bother, because if you cant tell from that photo then I really wouldn't want to be around any car you repair. And luckily I never will :D
