I removed the aux belt after work today and the noise is still there so its nothing related to that.

Also managed to peel back the manifold heatsheild - the 2 top leftmost studs have gone, and seem to have snapped off about 2-3mm inside the actual alloy head - bugger! Obviously been that way for a while too as where the nut would have been is rusty.

Anyway I couldn't see any black soot around the area from a leak but you can see the manifold isn't hard up against the head around that area like it should be so guess that is the problem.

I have read the favourite method is to weld something onto the stud remains to help extract but there isn't much clearance to see let alone get a mig in there so not sure how to proceed?

Its probably beyond me but would a garage be able to handle the job any better?

I've had a lot of issues with this car but beleived i was getting on top of it but now this. Honestly getting sick of spending my weekends working on it...i don't mind spending time modifying but when its constant repairs it starts to grate a bit...
 
Well it is a "Fix It Again Tomorrow" but if you persevere you may get a repair holiday sometime!
