In the last 2 weeks I have had driven to Somerset and Eastbourne; in both journeys there and back I have had problems with my speedometer; after approximately 50 miles the speedometer has stated that I am travelling far slower than I actually am e.g. I am in 5th gear and the speedometer shows I am travelling at 5 miles an hour. The garage says there is nothing wrong with the computer and has said there is nothing they can do! The car has only done 7000 miles and is 18 months old.

If you can, get a friend to video the speed and a view out the window, then go straight back to the garage with the evidence?

Hello and welcome. :)

How doubly disappointing. :(

The speedo should be trouble free..and you would hope it could be easily sorted.

Advice :
Keep an eye on the trip distance..

At 60 mph the 0.1's of a mile should be changing pretty regularly.

IF the miles are clicking by.. but the speedo says virtually zero that would indicate a specific fault.

Do let us know what you see.

It is digital. Has anyone else had a similar problem? The garage says the problem does not register on the car's computer but if it is a mechanical problem re the speedo and the engine is running appropriately it would not show - would it?

My local garage have changed a few digital dashes, so there must be an issue somewhere with them

I assume by that there's no faulte code showing so they don't want to look into it any more as it requires some proper diagnostics

Do you have a dash camera that can be placed such it can see the speedometer?(try a sticking it to the side window?) Then go back, I doubt there will ever be a fault code I might suggest you put your complaint in, in writing?

You could get somebody to connect up while driving and moniter the abs signals for wheel speed if they are all ok and they should be if no warning light it would pretty much confirm it's a cluster fault

You shouldn't need to do all that though..

There's almost certainly a fault in the instrument (or the sender to it) and since the console is getting a signal (however weak) or just not translating the signal into the correct speed, then it won't show up as a fault on the diagnostics.

Diagnostics only tend to note signals that are outside set parameters. Right now, it thinks it's doing 5mph instead of 50mph.. or it knows it's doing 50mph but the console is translating it as 5mph. If the odometer shows the correct distance then it's likely to be the console rather than the sender.

Anyways.. if it's a new car 7000 miles in total/18 months old then it's under warranty and the Fiat dealer (?) has to sort it. If it's just new to you but is a second-hand car older than 3 years but you've had it 7000 miles/18 months, then it will be out of warranty and guarantee, unless the selling garage feels sympathetic enough to help.
