Yes the 500 is amazing for fun and style, but for low running costs a small Japanese or Korean car with a very long warranty would probably be better. I am surprised at the things that have needed replacing already.
We had a Toyota IQ, as the small car before the Twinair... it was sold at 4 years old/45000miles on the clock and nothing other than basic servicing and 2 front tires was needed there.
Prefer the looks, drive and the fun of the twinair duologic though.... to the somewhat boring and very dependable with cheap servicing Toyota lol

Something else to remember is that if Fiat had used a traditional autobox with a torque converter, they'd never have been able to make the cutoffs for cheap emissions based road tax, and the fuel economy would likely have been at least 10% worse. The cost of both these added together over 6yrs/60000 miles would likely be at least as much as the cost of replacing a selespeed unit.

Simple fact is that if you want or need an autobox, whatever the technology used, and whatever marque of vehicle you choose, it's going to cost you more per mile on average to buy and run your car.

Totally agree, I really like the Duologic box on my twinair and if it needs replacing at some point £2000 (£1300-1600 for the complete Duologic parts + Labour at the specialist) is less money than I have spent on major repairs to some of my other cars in recent years. I don't need an autobox, I just love having them!
