Are rusty sumps fairly common on Fiats? This 500 is only 2009 and I was frankly surprised to see it in this condition. Suspect I'll need to replace in the summer. Thought about wire brushing and treating, but gave that a wide berth in case it develops a leak.

On the front caliper, what tool do you use for the slider bolt? I'm used to 7mm Allen key on VAG cars, so suspect it's a torx head? Can anyone confirm please.

Bought our 59 plate in Nov 15 the dealer replaced the sump as it was so rusted that I had not noticed, also check the rear beam axel and treat the rust. So yes common, also look at the shockers all round, if the car makes any noises going over speed humps the front lower control arms are probably failing ours made a terrible noise after doing both its totally silent.
 
If only Fiat had fitted an inexpensive plastic engine tray. Checked out original Fiat sumps, so looking at £60ish. Hopefully it's a straight-forward access. Worked on cars, where some of the sump bolts are inaccessible unless you remove part of the subframe. Job for the summer. (y)

If only Fiat had painted and corrosion proofed the sump properly. Like many of the component parts, they are prone to corrosion because they aren't properly protected when the car is new.

Look beyond the galvanised bodyshell and you'll find the car is just as much of a rustbucket as Fiats of the 1970's (n).

But we love 'em in spite of that.

I don't know about rusty but the one persistent problem I had with my 59 plate 500 was sump leaks, pretty much from when the car was about six month old. Turns out the garage I got it from never left it to dry long enough after sealing it when fixing under warranty - only got it to stop after taking it to a local garage.

Think his problem is it's rusted through and therefore leaking
