Hi all,

Sorry for coming across like a complete idiot but I'm about to use the provided scissor jack on my 500 lounge because I want to take off the drivers side front wheel because in the past 2-3 days when I have the window down I can hear a rubbing noise that speeds up and slows down with wheel rotation and as its difficult to really get behind the wheels on full lock I was gonna take off the front drivers wheel and check for anything untoward.

My question is: where do I put the scissor jack? Yes, there is the arrow near the drivers front wheel and behind that is a lip of metal, probably called the sill? That runs all the way along the car, and the jack has a slot cut out of the top part that fits this sill in perfectly.

So, yes I'm stupid, I understand this completely but I still needed to ask cause I've never jacked before or taken a wheel off(but I do know how to take a wheel off), do I put the scissor jack slot over this sill directly below the arrow and jack it up, really don't wanna damage anything, but if yes then I'm basically not jacking on the sill I'm jacking either side of it slotted over the sill, hope this makes sense and hope someone can help thanks a lot,

Lee.

Thanks a lot, that helped massively, took wheel off with no problems, turned out the rubbing is from the breaks, the pads are worn basically to the metal so that must be what's causing it, don't suppose you have one of those diagrams for disk and pad changing on the front thanks a lot,

Lee.

If I were you, I'd buy yourself a Haynes Manual. Invaluable.

Brake pad change on a 500 is really very easy. I'm more concerned however that your front pads have ground down as far as the metal. What sort of servicing regime is your car subjected to? It is vitally important to check brake pads/discs routinely. I would also change your discs, not just your pads. Discs are cheap enough, Brembo's can be had for about 20 quid a pair and you can pick up genuine Fiat brake pads for about 25 quid on ebay.

If you do the job yourself, make sure you have some brake cleaner and piston retractors. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DISC-BRAKE-SPREADER-PISTON-PAD-SPREADER-SEPARATOR-CAR-CALIPER-HAND-TOOL-/201402082399?hash=item2ee47fe45f

Thanks frupi for taking the time to find links and provide a great reply, the car is serviced every year by a friend who I trust completely, I do believe that recent mot did show up brakes were getting close but I'm guessing I just forgot to mention that to him, I look after my car as best as I can but because of said friend I've never had to bother under the hood, apart from regular oil, water, fluid checks and tyre checks and keeping it clean, that's about as far as I go, I do think it's time I got stuck in and did some jobs myself, I will do my brakes myself but was thinking might just change the pads as my first attempt as it looks easy enough and I don't think I wanna mess with taking it all apart as, well, its the brakes and I don't wanna endanger myself, although I fix computers for a living and am quite methodical so I doubt I'd stuff it up but I think I'd rather just do the pads for now, thanks for those links and as for brake cleaner how's this:

Thanks again,

I guess if you have to buy brake cleaner from 'H', then yes, that'll do it. I guess I'm lucky, I have a discount hardware shop close by me that sells the same size cans for less than half that price. I hope it all goes well. (y)
