Re: Is TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synth any good?

Hmm, weird innit? So we share an identical engine, built by the same factory no doubt and yet the oil spec is different?

I've used 5w30 ACEA C3 in my car for 5 years and indeed that is what the independent garage I've used in the past put in. I certainly wouldn't pay the money for Selenia oil in my own car when the GM stuff is a darn sight cheaper. Asda do do 5w30 ACEA C3. I've only ever bought a two litre bottle from ASDA to top up a half used container of GM Dexos 2.

I would personally say 'C' is better, low ash content and all that, good for DPF/MAP sensor/throttle body etc.

Re: Is TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synth any good?

I have a '06 Croma 1.9 16V and the book says SELENIA WR 5W40 (ACEA B3/B4) even though it has a DPF. I think this is because they were early DPF equipped cars and Selenia did not have a C3 available. I'm planning to use Morris Lubricants MULTILIFE C-THREE 5W-40 at the next change. 45 for 5l direct from Morris. Always been happy with their products and support. They also do lots of industrial and vintage lubricants.

I was using Morris lubricants 30 years ago when I first started out in work and as you say, good stuff. That being said, with me changing my oil every 5k miles, I wouldn't personally pay 45 for 5L of oil. The GM Dexos 2 is good oil and I personally swear by it.

It's funny isn't it? We've had such long threads/discussions on the correct spec of oil to put in a 500, and here we are talking about two different marques of car, Croma and Saab which use an identical engine built by Fiat and we're using different oil specs.

It's better for the emissions control equipment (and probably essential for a DPF equipped diesel), but not as good in respect of preventing engine wear.

The challenge faced by oil manufacturers is to find replacements for the additives that protect the engine as well as the ones previously used, which can no longer be added at the same levels because of potential damage to the catalyst & DPF.

There are alternatives, but they're unsurprisingly more expensive, which is why C3 oils usually cost more than A3 ones.

If you were running a decatted 500 solely as a track day car, you'd likely want to use an A3 oil. Otherwise, best stick to what the manufacturer recommends.

i wasnt too happy with magnatec, it really was the cheap version of the castrol as castrol edge is their top range but much more expensive. i saw the specs of the oil and aral was much better for me.

Re: Is TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synth any good?

Really? from what i know and checked with mechanicals & over the internet it is almost the same oil, in Israel the Edge costs 2.5$ more than Magnatec :P
I have been also reading about problems with the Edge becoming like sludge in the engine, dont know if its related to anything.

Im also before oil changes (i change every 10K) - now thinking about getting the Valvoline MST 5W40

10,000 kilometers? if so thats way too much.
15,000 km is more reasonable.

Re: Is TRIPLE QX 5w40 Fully Synth any good?

Yes every 10K, + because most of my ways are in town and for a very small distance, my job is 2 miles away haha, its about 4-6 miles a day depend on if i wanna spin around for a bit
Also its pretty cheap to replace the oil, about 13$ a quart here, plus the job comes out for about 150 dollars for everything including the parts.
I think when it comes for the small jobs like replacing fluids filters and similar - i dont take the chances, i have seen engines that are being treated every 30K by the book! filled and damaged with sludge (treated in the dealership).

That's dubious guidance Ahmett. My annual Fiat 500 mileage is 10,000km (6,000 miles) so the service recommendations are for annual oil and filter changes.

That's really cheap haha, what brand is it, Selenia? i wanted the Royal Purple because of my very good experience with the car i had before, but it doesn't fit fiat's recommendations.
Also - the dealerships here sells Selenia, but in the highest prices i have seen - about 27$ a liter! The poor Abarth's owners have to buy it from them because they are the only suppliers..
