+1. This really isn't rocket science- people are running rather large risks for the sake of saving a few quid every (if you follow the guidance  ) 18000 miles. Just follow the sodding specification properly.

I would certainly follow FIAT's recommendations (note I did not say "specifications" there) to the letter whilst in warranty- buy Selenia from shop4parts if you're on an "as cheap as possible" basis (why did you buy a 500 if you were that bothered?). An extra (say) £50 in oil over the warranty period is money well spent, compared to arguing the toss with FIAT (who aren't exactly renowned for their generous warranty provisions) over a Uniair module failure.

I'd also strongly disagree with the "a modern engine cares less about oil specifications than an older engine" comments above.
how can fiat proved if you use selenia or not on a warranty claim? if its 5w-40 C3 they cant say a thing. The manual never says you MUST use Selenia oil now does it?

It's still better than no oil at all.

An engine wouldn't even run with no oil
Well, you'd think so but.... Many moons ago my mate's uncle, whose a plumber, had his Simca van fail the MOT big style so decided to scrap it. Knowing full well the scrappie would only give him a goldfish & 2 balloons for it he was determined they wouldn't make any money on it so he drained the oil & then thrashed it the 15 miles to the yard. Said scrappie sold it on & it was frequently sighted for at least the next 18 months!

It's no joke - back in the day, we used to race on vegetable oil.

The smell of Castrol R in the paddock at Brands on a summer's afternoon.... it's enough to make my memory water...

Castrol is a contraction of Caster Oil.
Back about '95 I was hammering up the M6 long distance in a lotus Elite (70's wedge, not the 60's one, 2l 16V TC engine) when I looked down and saw the oil pressure gauge showing zero. Car had no oil pressure light, so no idea how long it had been like that. Thought it was usual dodgy electrics and as I'd just passed a "1 mile to services sign", I backed off a bit and carried on to the services. Opened the bonnet and there was oil everywhere. A breather pipe had collapsed and the oil blew out the vent. I took a full service quantity of oil to top it up. I'd put Slick 50 (a popular PTFE engine treatment back then) in the engine when I got the car and I think it probably worked. I wouldn't put it in a modern engine, but will if I get another classic.
Tesco sunflower oil? only if I was in the middle of nowhere and REALY dhad to get somewere - or it was a hire car

Mmmm Castrol R....! Back in my biking days my mate loved the smell that much he bought a litre and used to pop a bit in his tank to get the smell.

remember you had to run from new or rebuilt on it though, if you ran on mineral then switched to castrol R you would glaze the piston and bore and cause seize ups

All my biking mates are now old gits, but they still buy a litre and pop a bit in the tank of their lawnmowers to get the smell :D

just filled my engine with tesco value sunflower oil so i hope you are right
What were you thinking? Your Italian car needs Italian olive oil, and at least extra-virgin quality!

Please don't mention the delightful smell of Castrol R too much.

The EU Barons will make a Stinkometer test part of the Mot if they get 'wind' of it!

Mine was when my kids, 20 and 22, said one day, casually in conversation, not knowing I was in earshot !, Dads over there, but he's a grumpy old git today, stay away. When Grandchildren came along, I was askeed what the children should call me.... I surprised them both by saying Grump. They asked why and I said ...it's because you do ! Their flabber was gasted until I explained that I heard them years before. :)

for my diesel croma it says use synthetic 5w-40 acea b4 cant see that on any asda stuff so what is better than a b4? ive googled it but still confused

How old's your Croma dave? I believe the Croma uses the same 1.9 unit as in my Saab (2008 build) and the oil for that is 5w30 ACEA C3. I use the recommended genuine GM Dexos 2, costs 20 quid for 5 litres.
