Hi Guys

Started to notice my 500c TA has got a real loss of power under full acceleration from 3500rpm up, It seems fine up to 3500rpm, although it does seem to have a lot of "Burble" on the exhaust even at tickover.

Tried to get past a vehicle on a hill yesterday that I am very used to and it caught me out big time, just lost power and stuttered above 3500rpm. Kept dropping back 200-300rpm and then picking up again,. almost felt like fuel starvation

Called the selling dealer to get it looked at under warranty, (Its 2 years 4 months old), so in the dealer warrantry year.

Had all its servicing done at the supplying dealer, when I phoned them the rep said as its due a service in 3000 miles they would want to do the service before doing warranty work (Seems a bit of a pee take), and the service (Standard service with no extras woul;d be £425.. I think my laugh gave away I thought he was taking the pee.

I asked him to break down what justified the cost and he said it was standard Fiat costs. I pointed out the last service it had was a full service and brake fluid change and cost less than £250. (And I had already had quotes from other Fiat Main Dealers for less than £250 this time) at which point he said he would see if he could do it for £250,

But I told him no thanks I will just get the warranty work done on the stutter and have the service done when it gets to the required mileage.

He then said if thats the case I would be better taking it to to someone who offered the cheaper quotes for service and get them do do the warranty work as well as he did not want to do it if he was not doing the servicing.

Anyway apart from that appaling bit of customer service anyone else with a TA had this problem, I am thinking Plugs or Coil Packs (although it had the Coil packs changed under the recall some time back).

The last service was supposed to have included plugs, but it would not suprise me if they had not done them.

Have you checked oil level?

It's still under warranty with Fiat. Take it to the a Fiat dealer, they will do a far better job of repairing it than some random place that's never fixed a twinair 500

Yep its at 75% of max on dipstick

But if the dealer wont do the warranty work without doing a lucratie service over 3000 miles before its due!!! (As this is the 3rd year dealer warranty) I assume I has to be the supplying dealer.

Have a few decent independents around me (Alfatechnico) and AFH1 might give them a go rather than surrering the selling dealer again

flashy, for servicing, I can't recommend enough McEwans Garage in Derby. Not so much of a trek from Sutton. I've had two of my cars serviced there and they do an excellent job. They are an independent Fiat specialist.

As for the warranty work, we've got a few around us if you are prepared to travel to get to one or two of them. Sturgess at Leicester, Stoneacre at Worksop (they did our first service and all the warranty work on our old POP), Autoworld in Chesvegas and Bristol Street, Derby. I'm assuming that the supplying dealer is the one nearest to you wink wink! I'm considering using Sturgess for the first service on our TA, despite the 80 mile round trip.

Yeah its good old autoworld. not dealt with Derby since it was Coop, had my previous 500 from them. Hear lots of good things about stoneacre.

Might try Derby again as it would be a good excusse for a trip to Alton Towers while they are working on it!!

No probs, I kinda guessed who the supplying dealer was. I had to negotiate between them and Worksop over the last POP and Stoneacre won it on price.

As for Derby, not used the Frank Whittle road group for a while. I had a look for some reviews but couldn't find any. Reason I mentioned Sturgess is that they have lots of reviews. You could always make a half day out in Leicester? I'll keep away from Alton Towers, I prefer to keep my lunch in my stomach rather than projectile vomit over the family in the roller coaster car in front of me lol!

My sister had the excessively burbly exhaust at idle on her MiTo TwinAir 85bhp and although I can't say what it was like over 3500rpm as I hardly drove it, it ran lumpy & the idle was a bit erratic. Might not be this with yours, but the problem with hers was the UniAir Control, which is like/the same as the MultiAir unit. It was replaced under warranty at 10,000 miles.

For warranty work I would try these:

http://www.jcs-kegworth.co.uk/

Curiously they don't appear on the dealer locator but they are Fiat Approved and have been for over 40 years - far longer than a lot of these other amateurs. Heard some very good things about them & the lack of overly fancy showroom tends to bode well for more realistic costs, from experience. (y)

I recall you do fairly hefty mileage Flashy, what's it at now? You may well have one of the more high mileage TA's out there so it'll be interesting to see what the fault is. Hope you get it sorted and at least you have the comfort of the warranty.

Mileage has settled down a bit now, I have bought a Focus Diesel for long distance runs so the 500c is now doing mainly local work,

Just about to click over 48k miles now at 2 years 4 Months.

High enough all the same for its age, do let us know what the problem was when you get it sorted,

I'm curious, if there are 'Fiat approved' garages such as this one, why don't they appear on the Fiat dealer locator as an authorised Fiat service centre?

I went to a Sandicliffe group garage, an approved Fiat service centre today in Nottingham. They are primarily, a Kia, Mazda dealership and they don't sell new Fiat cars as they are not a Fiat dealership, but they are on the Fiat dealer locator as an approved service centre authorised to carry out warranty work and of course servicing. I got a quote off them today for a low mileage first service on our TA and the promise that they would check out our rather erratic performing Stop/Start which they informed me would be fixed under warranty by them if it was faulty. Only three more quotes to get lol!

I can't fathom out how a franchised dealer is refusing to look at warranty work from you?!

I'd be calling fiat customer care.

Autoworld Chesterfield seem to be a law unto themselves with both prices and what they want to do

Just to add, I refuled the car today and it seems much improved (Still has the power loss but not as bad) not done many miles to test it yet though, so at the moment am hoping it was just a bad tank of fuel

I think in the case of JCS, it's a glitch on the dealer locator. They're pretty insistent on their own website that they're authorised for Fiat warranty work, and several of their used cars are recent ex Fiat Fleet (looking at the reg's, WM13, WU13, WV13 etc), so unless they've got some sort of deal with another dealer who's selling them stock (which I wouldn't imagine to be the case), it looks like they genuinely are Fiat approved but just not on the dealer locator.

Might be worth anyone who visits JCS mentioning this to them as it won't do them any favours not being on the Fiat site.

Did Sandicliffe used to be Fiat sales as well? There's a few cases of places giving up the sales side but keeping servicing. Autoworld sound like they need a good talking to - there used to be a few bad reports about them on here & it seems they've not quite shaken off their bad habits. I was amazed when it was announced they were to become an Abarth franchise as they're meant to go to only the best performing dealers - best performing at pi**ing people off, perhaps?

I have absolutely no idea about JCS in the respect of whether they are a officially approved service centre for Fiat or not, again, only from looking at their website. I'm not doubting it at all, but if I wanted a definitive answer, I would 'phone Fiat CS and ask them. Any 'glitch' as you say, Fiat should do JCS a favour and sort it out. When we owned our first 500 POP, along with a couple of other Fiat dealers, JCS never responded to an email I sent them enquiring about having the car serviced with them. That was for its first service. It could be that my email went into their spam box hence no response.

Sandicliffe interestingly, don't appear on the Fiat dealer network on the usual internet site, but they do appear on the Fiat 'phone APP, and that is how I know about them. They did used to sell Fiat cars, but not anymore, but as I mentioned before, they definitely are an authorised Fiat service centre and can carry out warranty work.

I'm a bit of a beggar for getting quotes though, so I'll be comparing Fiat dealers from Rotherham to Leicester, basically the M1 corridor because it's very quick and easy to get a few of them from where I live.
