our fiat 500 diesel 2007 plate has failed its MOT becauee of a worn inner tie rod . Fiat say you cannot buy the rod but have to buy the complete steering rack for a nice £390 any advice. Its the inner tie rod not tracker end.

thanks for looking
Anthony

Dare I ask where it was tested? Fast fit type place?!
Think I'd be looking for a second opinion first.
How many miles has your 500 done?
If it's that bad I would be asking Fiat for a contribution towards repair, on a safety critical part that should last longer than 4/5 years (especially if low mileage)
If it is bad and Fiat don't want to know (quite possible) then maybe ask a few motor factors if they sell replacement rod.

You can buy the rack ends. Whoever you've spoken to is an absolute farktard.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the cheapies off eBay and I'd get a good quality part like a FeBi, QH or Lemforder rack end.

... Although technically they are correct if referring to genuine Fiat parts. ;)

In the 10 years I worked at a Dealer, Fiat only ever supplied complete racks, even though the individual tie-rods are usually available from non-gen sources.

fiat have tried that with a few guys in the croma section, quoting £400 for a new rack is extreme when the track rod ends are about £17 a side i think

OK fair enough, but who in their right mind would fit OE Fiat suspension stuff when it appears to be rather crapulent.

You think Quinton Hazell make parts? They buy them in.

Oh, and I've had some *very* bad experiences with QH parts, so I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

Incidentally, go to any Alfa forum regarding the 156/147/GT and they say that buying aftermarket suspension parts is a BAD idea, and that you should stick to the OEM FGA (which are made by TRW) parts. Having compared the two side by side with a few different aftermarket components, I'm inclined to agree. The shagged set of top arms on my 156 had been changed a few months before I bought it, and yep, you guessed it; they weren't OE.

Well people have bad experiences with all brands of course :)

QH stuff generally has a decent rep though. I'm not saying all aftermarket parts are good, but FeBi and Lemforder both have a great reputation. PErsonally when I buy spare bits for the 500 I'm going to stick with Lemforder and Febi :)

Yeah, I'm not saying they're automatically bad, but I have noted a quality reduction over time.

In general, in my experience, the fit and finish of OEM stuff is better or less troublesome - after all it's the same component the buyer in FGA chose after the engineering team specced it for the car!

I think in certain specialised cases like 147 and 156 suspension arms it's probably best to go with OEM, but I reckon at least for rack ends and tie rod ends for a 500 you're probably absolutely fine and most probably better off going with aftermarket stuff.

The OE stuff on the 500 is pretty poor IMHO.
