Technical Fiat 500 Warranty

Technical Fiat 500 Warranty

Today I looked at an Abarth 500 esseesse with 13,075 miles registered May 2010 that had NO oil changes since new. I lifted the cap and I saw heavy scum and scum inside the top of the 'engine'. Checking the dip stick and after several 'ins and outs' to get a 'marking' found that the oil was thin and appeared to be different colours. After probing the salesman he said that it was topped up last week since none was registering on the dip stick. It was done before going on a 'company night out' about 80 miles down the road with another colleague. Oil on this particular model should be changed every 6K miles as per the revised service schedule. When I looked into the 'scum' problem it may not be a 'show stopper' since it can happen with a car lying in cold wintry conditions and not getting an opportunity to burn off the vapour.

In the US there was a bit of scam with people believing that oil should be changed every 3K miles. The 5K oil service has been bantered around as the ideal mileage at which to give a new car its FIRST oil change.

On another thread I learned from 'the study' done on Mobil oils that 8K miles was the optimum change. You metioned Shell with the 9K miles - well Mobil guarantee their oils up to 10K miles whilst their 'Extended Performance' (not available in our viscosity range) states 15K miles IF used with their special filter. On the severe conditions that can reduce the service interval is Excessive idling - so the majority of cars (possibly 75%) would 'fall' into this category.

So I would still stand by a 5K mile change on the FIRST and there after a 8K mile or 12 month (whichever came sooner) as recommended by JR providing you were not doing the Nurburgring.

The first oil change is often a lot sooner than later ones as during break in rough edges from manufacturing will be worn off and end up in the oil.

Mobil oil has to 'break in' i.e engine wear decreases as the oil ages and that the optimum change is at 8K miles (coincides with the US A500 service schedule).

as recommended" by who? Ford says 5000 miles. Read your manual.
For once more, Thank you Michael! :p

So we are concluding that Fiat are stupid in recommending 18k or 12 month oil changes?

Yes the abarth is turbocharged, turbo engines are more of a mess generally = )

Correct if wrong but Fiat mentions at the manual the normal services (big ones as we call them here). An oil change could not considered as a main service process. + I have been told by the Fiat dealer about this 8k (km) oil change!

The fiat manual says change oil every 30,000 km or 12 months if in cities, and check and top up if necessary every 3000 km. So yes when i service my car its only a 'big service' as they say here.
The Fiat dealers are clueless never listen to them, they even got my tire pressures wrong at the service, which is really the easiest thing to do.

Will be interesting to se if this makes it to mainland UK and to all models or just the 500.

I was hoping to have had details on the small print on the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty that is being 'talked' about by the Dealers here despite promises from 3 different dealers of getting me the information. Hopefully it should materilise in the new year but I'm not 'holding my breath'.

Thanks to Gavin in the Lee garage in Cork for this. He said that he might be able to get the small print from the one of the reps. Also mentioned that there's a 'get together' in Milan for the launch of the 2012 Panda in Feb and it should be available here in March 2012. They are expecting quite a few sales with the new model along with the 5 year guarantee. Note the mileage hasn't changed it is just spread over a longer period and it's supposedly a 'bumper to bumper' - so no 'dealer bit'.

Thats very cool!
I wish i could do that = ) Mine is done at 60000 = ). There again nothing has broken so far and all the other costs are regarding maintenance which you have to do even in warranty (especially in warranty actually!)

The small print. Warranty isn't exactly 'bumper to bumper' being 'cut back' in year 4 & 5. At least the 2 year manufacture's warranty has been extended to 3 - unsure if you would think of the 4&5 being equivalent to the 'original' dealer bit. Again thanks to the Lee garage in Cork in Ireland...

Dear Dealer Principal

Please be advised that all Fiat vehicles registered from 1st January 2012 until 31st March will carry a 5 year, 100,000km warranty. This additional cover also includes 5 year roadside assistance.

This additional warranty is manufacturer cover which gives us a distinct advantage over many of our competitors who use insurance based warranties. This initiative addresses one of the large concerns of the buying public in this segment and will give Fiat a very tangible benefit when comparing our product to others in the market place. The extended warranty will be administered through the Fiat/SIGI system in the same way as the first three years.

The first 3 years Warranty comes with the same level of cover, terms and conditions as we have been using heretofore. Years 4 and 5 come with a slightly reduced level of cover and details of items not covered are listed below.

 Drive belt
 Front & rear brake pads
 Wiper blades
 Timing belt
 Rear drum brakes
 Shock absorbers
 Injectors
 Rear brake shoes
 Battery
 Glow plugs
 Clutch
 Tyres
 Spark plugs
 Filters
 Car windows
 Front & rear disc brakes
 Piping
 Coating & cloths
 Fuses
 Light cluster
 Lamps
 Accessories
 Equipment not put in place in original by Fiat Auto

Specifically the warranty does not cover defects caused by normal wear and tear.

This sound a bit like the free servicing offer Fiat made a couple of years ago that hardly anyone was able to take advantage of due to the small qualifying window. It benefits anyone who buys a "stock" vehicle but anyone who orders one from the factory as of now might not get their car in time.

That was well spotted - I missed that. I got the impression from my earlier post that they were going to offer the new 5 year along with the new Panda and combined it would give you an offer you couldn't refuse. Hopefully they will look at extending the offer. Given the 12 week window of ordering in Ireland (can arrive in 10 weeks) you would have to 'get on your bike' to avail of the 5 years. Can't see it happening in the UK on the Abarths.:)

It's a fiat warrantie not abarth. They're different companies ;)

Just like Ferrari is a different company to Fiat but yet Fiat own them. I accept that the warranty is issued separately by Abarth and not Fiat.
Still if Fiat UK offered a 5 year warranty like the one in Ireland I would imagine it would be extended to the 'Abarth' range. One guy on here from Cyprus has 5 years with his A500 which is probably what was on offer for all the Fiats in his country. IIRC Fiat USA are offering 4 years but it might only be an 'opening' offer and might get reduced as it did in Ireland - it was 2+2 in '08 and then went to 2+1 in '09.

I was with the warranty man in a nearby Fiat / Alfa dealership and he confirmed that the 5 year warranty on new Fiat 500s in Ireland is expiring on the 31st of March 2012 (2-3 days left). Speaking with the salesman he said that he could get any colour that one wanted. I asked him if the TA was selling and he said the following...
No one in Ireland is really buying the TA. Same tax band as the 1.2 and it's really only worthwhile if you are trying to avoid the congestion charge in London. I borrowed a matt black TA over the w/e and had to put €30 into it whilst normally it would only cost me €15 in the 1.2. It's bloody thirsty and you really have to know how to drive it to get the economy from it.

P.S. My faith in Fiat / Alfa warranty has been restored. This morning I got a call from Fiat/Alfa HQ stating that as a goodwill gesture there are going to put that new Blue&Me module in the MiTo so I can get the full functionality of the Tom Tom Live 2 but I would have to pay for the labour. This was granted on the basis that I had been a 'loyal' customer over the years. Nice belated birthday gift from yesterday. :)
