Hi

I am picking up my matt black 1.4 500 on 1st March. I have traded in mine and my fella's astra vxr for the 500 due to the fact that my fella needs a van and the insurance on both would have been almost £5k!!

Anyway...as you can imagine the vxr was pretty nippy! Is there anything anybody can recommend to make the 1.4 engine a little more lively?

Thanks!

Toni

Great Choice of car, you'll have to get some pics up of it when you pick it up, i wouldn't bother modifying its engine its great as it is :)

Oh yes, I will definitly get some pictures up when I get it!

I was originally going for the 1.2 lounge but saw the blackjack and fell in love!

I've only tested the 1.2 engine so interested to see how the 1.4 will fare up!

A remap and induction will find you about 5% if you're lucky. If you want a bigger punch, fit a supersprint manifold and run a very free flowing exhaust with a 200 cell sports cat. That'll poke you up to about 120bhp.

:)

Compared to the 1.2 the 1.4 is really quick. Its much more lively than the 1.2, especially after 3000rpm. If i put my foot down in 2nd exiting a roundabout its on the red line in no time.

matt black cars need chalk;)

wow.....not sure what to say about the chalk! does it come off?? or am I being really thick.....!!

would find it really funny if I could hand some chalk to my nieces and nephew and said go draw on the car! haha!

That's really reassuring to hear tbh! Thanks.....will be putting it through its paces no doubt once I pick it up!

I noticed on this forum most people prefer the 1.2 due to its economy and low end torque. But if your not too bothered about less mpg but want more fun then you wont regret the 1.4 16v. The sport buttons fun too. And it makes motorway driving easier (less right foot travel).

If you're into modifying the car, you really should have bought the Abarth version. With it's Turbocharged (T-jet engine) there are already 1000's of mods and tuning kits available for it.

A basic tuning box will cost you £300 and will give you around 160 to 170 BHP, for around £3750 you can have it up to 220+ BHP, spend even more and have over 300 BHP if that's your thing!

EDIT: Sorry, i guess it's a bit late now?...

I would love an Abarth but the reason we have swapped the vxr for the 500 is to save money on insurance.

When you talk about the basic tuning box are you meaning for the Abarth?

Surely modifying a standard car is worse for insurance than buying a quicker standard car?

Cheers

I was just trying to find out what could make the car a little faster - not going to go for any major mods as yes you're right that would be defeat the object!

The best way to make it more lively as you ask is to press the "sport" button. you would be surprised how much difference it makes to the responce of the engine and it makes it feel faster. I was impressed on my test drive.

Not on the 1.4 500's. It actually doesn't make any appreciable difference to the power output or delivery. I know this because I specifically did a bunch of back to back rolling roads to prove it.

What it does do is make the throttle response more jerky to simulate 'performance'. In reality it does nothing for the delivery.
