Well, if you choose a petrol engine from the By Diesel range, you get the best of both world!

AFAIK that engine will be introduced in the 500c first, maybe added to the 500 range at a later date, perhaps in conjunction with the new petrol engines.

TBH I'd probably go for the 1.2 then. 1500 is a lot.

1500 is a lot of money, my vote is for the 1.2 unless you're really in need of the extra oomph of the turbo diesel.

Well of course it will be better. But I think what you mean is "will it hold its value better" and the answer to that is that nobody knows.

Re: 1.2 petrol /or 1.3 diesel?

I'd say the best thing you can do is weigh up your options by considering your driving conditions and how many miles a year you're putting in. There's a lot of posts on this forum describing mpg/driving conditions/driving style so you'll be able to draw a conclusion from that.

As an example, I'm in a 1.3 diesel spending 90% of my time on motorways and driving it like I stole it, getting ~57mpg and putting in ~16,000 miles a year.

Seeing as diesel and petrol are pretty much the same price these days (although who can predict how it'll fluctuate), how long will it take you to make your 1500 back? If the answer is you can't, consider throwing that 1500 at options and make your 1.2 a happier place to be

Well obviously the diesel does better MPG. The big question though is whether you'll be better off giving more money to Shell rather than giving it to Fiat.

Re: 1.2 petrol /or 1.3 diesel?

This was a significant factor in my buying decision, since I had planned to keep the car 5 years and oil was $150 a barrell at the time.

Long term oil is still forcast to go up - a lot. The extreme mpg of the 1.3 does offer some insulation from that eventuality.
