General 1st year service

General 1st year service

My 1.3 Sport with aircon, was £100 for its first service at the local dealer. I used the local dealer as I needed the software upgrade that stops the service reminder coming on at 12Kish miles.

They need the work at the moment, so negotiate.

Do you have to use the dealership or is it possible to use a garage that uses the right equipment? Just wondering as I do not want to ruin the warranty

Legally you are allowed to have your car serviced at any garage. The garage you choose must use Fiat parts and the oil has to meet Fiat's standard, and be marked on the invoice as such.

However, as I said above, don't accept the first price your dealer comes up with, haggle.

You should get it nearly as cheap as an independant.

I am NOT looking forward to September then. I thought about £150 max, same as my Ford's have cost for first service.

Ford first services are little more than oil/filter & check lights (vauxhall will charge you extra for checking tyre pressures!) wethers a FIat service is checking suspension/steering etc.

This happens soooo often. The tax disc is just one cost component of motoring. Fiat servicing seems to be expensive, but then this is where the dealers make their money.

Incorrect, some are lucky to make £18 on a first service.

Not get it done at any VAT registered garage using original parts but you need to get service light reset yourself (dont expect dealer to do this for nothing! so budget £30-50) and you wont get any software updates.

Hiya folks,

I have had a quote from a ford garage here on the Island to do a first service on my car (1.2 sport).

They said the correct service schedual will be followed and parts will be genuine, and they quoted £100-120.

I am thinking of taking it here. Is this about right or are they missing something?

Also, spoke to FIAT the other day and they inform me that there is a new updated service book (post 01/08). They said contact your dealer to have it replaced.

Also they said that the 500 doesent need a yearly service, it is an 18000/2years (wich ever first).
Only a few items need doing yearly i.e pollen filter.

Is this right?

My 1.4 Sport is due for a service in a couple of weeks and I am over 17000 miles as well.

I called 2 different Fiat dealerships today and was quoted £231 and £188, a substantial difference.

I think it may be worth calling round a few more to see if I can get it any cheaper.

Bear in mind that, whilst it is possible to get the car serviced an independent garage, re-sale value will always be stronger if it has a full manufacturer's service history.

So, for warranty work and scheduled services, it's best to use the main dealer, but for non-warranty items and other work, you might find it lower cost (and usually better customer service) to use an indy.

Shaggyjim, I understand that an annual service is required, but for very low mileage (less than 10,000 IIRC?) it's just the pollen filter and a couple of other bits, so it's cheaper.

That's news to me. If that's the case, that means it will be May 2010 if I don't do 18k miles by then. Ive done nearly 8k miles since collecting Nero & Bianco in late May 2008.

However, I'd have peace of mind if it was serviced annually or at 18k mile intervals to ensure optimum performance.

I don't know Shaggyjim but I am very interested in knowing if it is. As I do <5K a year I wont make 18K in a year or even in 2. So a service every two years would make this a much cheaper car to run

Anyone in the know - know? (y)

I've just been quoted £225! for the 1st service on our 1.4 sport from Richard Hardie in The Silverlink North Shields!
Not what I would call competitive!

Anyone suggest anyone else in the North East?

Sorry folks, I may have got my wires crossed?!?

I spoke to FIAT customer services the other day and asked about servicing my car. I have done 6200 miles in the first year. I was under the impression this was the case?

Anyway, sinse my last post here I have managed to get my car quoted for £140 at my FIAT dealer, so will be taking it there.

I am sure that the customer services bloke said that it dosent need a service for 2 years/18,000miles. All that was needed for the first year if below 18,000 was a few checks i.e Brake condition.

I would just stick to what your service book sates folks. Mine sayds1yr/18,000miles or <10,000miles low mileage service.

Apologies

Si:)

I think i would have been a bit worried about a 2 year service interval, I would have taken it in at 1 year just for an oil change if that was the case.

C.

Even if you had done only 4K miles in that year?

Oil is the one thing that is affected most by low mileage. This to me translates into more short trips and cold starts without perhaps oil temperature ever really reaching it's peak so it retains more water than normal.

I had mine changed at 3500 miles (not by choice) and because of that I hope that when I have the low mileage annual service at about 7000 miles it will not need changing again but if Fiat stipulate it needs to be done then I will have to concur that they know best.

Just been quoted £280!

I've only done 2.5k in my 1.2 sport.

Seems a bit steep.
