Hi All,

Changing rear brakes, cylinders, shoes, springs, previous owner did the drums about a year ago.

Right side went together without a hitch. Left side drum will not go on over the shoes at all. Numerous attempts, stripped the right side again to do an A/B comparison and I cannot figure it out.
Gave up in the end and popped the original shoes back in it as they really weren't that bad.

Front brakes and new drums went together easily last night along with bearings but the last corner tonight, nope, zero joy!

Is there an adjustment on the shoe that I'm not seeing??

Thanks!

Gav

There is no adjustment to the actual brake assembly, but have you backed off the handbrake? The cable runs from 1 side, up the central tunnel, round a roller (at the bottom of the hand-brake lever) and across to the other side.
If you follow the hand-brake cable from the brake drum, you will see where the inner cable goes into a sleeve--this is where the adjuster is. 2 x 17mm nuts iether side of a small up-stand at the end of the threaded section of the outer cover for the cable. To release the cable tension you need to thread the nuts further down the threaded section, which effectively lengthens the inner cable, and therefore releases the tension on the hand-brake. You may only need to do this 1 side. Give the nuts a really good soaking in WD40 (or similar) prior to trying to adjust the outer cover.

hobbler, thanks for the pointer! I didn't do anything with the handbrake being honest, having done brakes on my 600 and 850 I've never had to look at it but I'll be sure to tomorrow as one side is rubbing slightly but with that said I haven't bled the system yet nor have I wheels on as I'm painting them and waiting for tyres to come in so I also haven't settled the pads by reversing/braking and 1st/braking.
