How on earth do you remove this nut?

Trying to replace the timing cover gasket and cannot remove this pulley nut. Any suggestions or tips? I'm assuming the nut is standard thread, not counter, as ive not read anything to the contrary.

Car is in gear, handbrake on etc...

Any help appreciated.

The nut undoes ANTICLOCKWISE looking from the rear. Sometimes it needs some 'impact' to undo the nut, even thought he tightening torque is not that high. Try putting a socket and a long bar on it, and then giving the bar a good 'clout'. If you can get another pair of hands to help, so much the better. Look at 'Bleeding Knuckles' page--'Oil Filter Mod'--he ran into the same problem.

Sorry, that should have read 'Oil Cooler Mod' and the latest entry on that page was just 3 days ago.

I'll have a look at the Oil cooler thread. I've tried using a bar and a quick jolt/tap with a hammer as well as the old trick of slightly tightening to then undo.

Nothing seems to work.

Thankyou for the advice though.

I used a chain wrench to hold the pully. Had that resting on the table then used all my weight pushing down on the socket and that did it.

Google chain wrench if you haven't seen one before.

I recently did this and ended up using a pneumatic impact wrench to remove it. I imagine the chain wrench would be the better/less violent method.

First check that the.lockwasher isn't sneakily gripping the base of the nut.
Drain the oil and remove the sump, taking great care not to damage the oil pickup and strainer. Get a chunk of soft timber and trap it between the crankshaft and inner crankcase wall as high and therefore in as strong a place as possible. Then follow previous suggestions. I used a good fitting socket and a 2lb lump hammer on the bar. It should work almost instantly, so don't bang on all day

Interesting solution to the problem fiat500!

Taking off the sump and replacing the gasket as well so will give it a go, thanks.

That's how I done it up. Engine was in rebuild stage at the time though!

Take care nor to get into conflict with conrods etc, maybe have an assistant and really think about where to get best advantage from the block. If you have a 32mm ring spanner that would be perfect. More likely you have a breaker bar and socket, but with a hammer the bar needs to be shortish. With a longer one you might do it by hand. Remember, the crankcase is only aluminium .

Thanks for the tips, looks like it's going to be easier to remove the engine from the car now.

I gave up on the gasket for now as it's only weeping so went to put it all back together and give it a good service, upon doing this it turns out one of the spark plug threads is barely there.

Can anyone reccomend in South East London/Kent that could repair this?

I don't know where you are in South-East London, but if SE6 is not too far away, try the 'Gonnella Bros' in Catford. They are Italian car specialists and are at 5a Catford Hill (practically opposite the old Greyhound stadium, under the railway arches)--their phone number is:- 0208-690-0060. I knew their uncle, Joe Disanto who used to have a little body-shop on the other side of the railway arches--(many,many years ago!)

Greetings,

Re your tight Nut (see my PM too) look on Ebay for the following tool -
BGS flywheel locking tool 1771 (German company - good bit of kit and well made) search for 'motorsport-toolsuk' they sell them, last price was £8.68 + £1.79 p&p. this tool locks the flywheel and everything associated with it. I have used it a few times now and it's the dog's nuts for the job!!! The tool just fits on one of the engine/gearbox studs, and slides into the teeth of the flywheel (bolt it on tight). Good luck.

Ian.

So i am reading the ''oil cooler'' thread (oil cooler installation on the works i guess:D) and noticed that lot of guys had a problem removing the big 32mm pulley nut. I recently removed the pulley to replace the timing chain and came to the same problem. What i did was to use the 8 or 10mm combination spanner to block the pulley from turning, I used one of the oil filter cover M6 screws and screw it from the inside of the pulley through the spanners eye and then put the open end of the spanner touching the engine just bellow the engine mount stud as you can see in the pictures. This is in the tight configuration, for removing the big nut you just have to put the spanner on the other side of the pulley. I hope you understand what i am trying to say here(y)
