General Fiat 1978 124 Spider

I have just purchased a 1978 Fiat Spider. It's in need of restoration. Body has rust... not too bad. Interior is doable. But here's the thing. The car hasn't been started for about 3 years. I need some reccommendations on what I should do prior to turning the key. Oil, coolant, etc. I don't want to make matters worse than they already are. I know the owner had problems and abandoned the car. I bought it. With no previous experience with old cars just a love for this little spider. Words of advice please.

well i have a 1977 fiat 124 thats been in a field for 7 years so im in the same situation....except i know i need a new carburetor, distributor, blah blah blah. Make sure al lthe fluids, filters, gaskets etc are replaced. or take the chance and drain the fuel tank, put new gas in and start it and see how it works. cant hurt to try once.

ok,drain all fluids from the engine.take out plugs.put some redex down the plug holes.now turn the crank by hand a few revolutions.clean the breather system thoroughly.clean the carb out[if fitted].take fuel tank out and clean.blow all fuel lines out.change points,condensor and rotor arm if pitted up.clean dizzy cap.i would change the lot personally.stick a bit of new fuel in carb.after new plugs etc,you are ready to start engine.good luck.

Change all fluids and drain fuel tank. Be sure to check the belt for wear and check to see if all timing marks are lined up right. VERY IMPORTANT
