On a 1978 124 Spider, my understanding is that correct timing is 0 BTDC. When I set my timing to that, it runs very rough and has very little power accelerating from stand still.

I had checked everything...timing belt, cams, carb, fuel pump, installed new plugs, new wires, and points (single set)

Out of frustration the other day, I blindly rotated the distributor and like magic the car idled very smoothly and accelerated from stand still like a jack rabbit.

When I got home, I put a timing light on to see what it was set to .. it was 20 or more degrees BTDC

Should I leave it like that or is it an indication of something else being wrong, if so, what?

Just joined. Your post is from 2011 so I guess I likely wont get help on the same issue.

Ignition Timing on European spec cars is 10 Degrees BTDC at idle.
No wonder the U.S. spec cars go like crap.

Incidentally, (according to official Fiat literature I have)) early US 124 Sports were set to 10 degrees, later ones to 5 degrees so I don't know where this 0 degrees came from, although early US 124 Sedan and Station Wagon were set to 0 degrees.

My advice is try 10 degrees and only retard if pinging is experienced.
(but check you're not then getting too much advance at full advance, iirc no more than about 30 degrees total)

AL.
