Un-fit for work?

Un-fit for work?

In response to The Beard I have to agree in some respects no child should suffer in poverty no child chooses to be in that family or life style, but also why are we paying out to people who earn good money a couple with a combined income of £80k a year can still happily claim child benefits, how does that help society
Between us, Mrs. Beard and I also pay around £500 per month. In the US, even those who can afford to pay for health insurance have to let it lapse if they fall on hard times such as being laid off. If a family is paying for a mortgage, a Chevy Blazer and a speedboat, the chances are the first thing that goes is the health plan. I'm sure there is a fall back plan, but I'm pretty sure it will have reduced benefits.

As for the £80K salary, wasn't this one of the things that the government tried to deal with soon after they were elected? I seem to remember they upset quite a few people with the distinction between a couple with one earner with an income of £80K and a couple with a shared income of the same level.

I remember being a little t**t as a kid because others had things that I didn't. My first "racer" looked great when I first got it, but after a while the wheel rims were a different colour from the rest of the wheels because it was 2nd hand and the wheels had been painted silver. It was nicked a year or so later and this time I got a brand new Sun racer. When I was about 15 some lads at our school started wearing Barathea blazers which were more expensive, and really, a much smarter fabric. Others went on a school cruise, neither of which my parents could afford.

Although I felt hard done to at times, it would have never have occurred that others had less than me. All things are relative and it's only when you think back that you realise you had a bloody good childhood, but I do believe that so much is dependant on the kind of life your parents give you. Maybe if you have parents who care more about themselves than their kids, the children need something more in the way of material posessions.

Well, that's my bit of "Cod" psychology for the day, time for bed.

And in any case your idiotic idea involves destroying something that works just because a small minority exploit it.

So you have a heart attack you pay your £100 excess, diagnosis of cancer? £100 please oh and some moron punches you in the face on the way home from the pub steals your phone and breaks your nose, that will be another £100 thank you very much. Can't afford it? Should have thought about that before you got I'll.

The older you get the higher the premium, obese? Pay more! Smoker? Pay more! Drink pay more! Drive a car, work in a desk job or as a drive a bus pay more.
Hardly a small minority. The only reason the number of unemployed is below 3 million is down to the way successive governments have massaged the figures (by redefining, renaming etc).

Also "Should have thought about that before you got I'll." You'll what?

You're assuming that a privatised NHS would run along exactly the same lines as private.
Why shouldn't people who go out & get bladdered on purpose, then do stupid things, pay an excess?
Why shouldn't the moron who punched you be made to pay for your treatment?
Why shouldn't smokers pay a slightly higher premium? Same with dangerous sports (my eldest is plays American Football and Rugby, for both sports he HAS to pay subs - which pays insurance (for medical treatment))

All I'm saying is that those who already pay into the system continue to do so - and those who contribute nothing at least contribute something.

The American system is based on voluntarily opting into a health plan, The UK system is compulsory - but only for those who pay tax. If the service is available to everyone then everyone who can make a contribution should.

Here we go again. The unions butchered the country. Example? In 1981 I worked in the air freight industry and one day had a rush job. The production line had run out of bolts for door plates on Metros, and unless a consignment reached the factory by 6 am at the latest. At 5:30 I pulled in through the gates and had my papers stamped in a small brick building. Despite telling the bloke in the blue warehouse coat how important the pallet in the back of the Transit was, he just replied: (in Brummie accent) "Take a seat over there and wait 'til you're called." Time went by and I phoned the office when they came in at 9 and was told to wait. At 10 I was still waiting and our people phoned the Forwarding Agent and told them we wanted more money. At about 10:45 I was told to "Drive to the roundabout and join the queue." [Woo-hoo]. I was going to see my family againe.....sometime. As I was waiting in a 200 yard long queue of 38tonne trucks a driver walked past and asked me what I had in the back. When he heard he told me to follow him & I drove into a large receiving shed. He told a bloke what I had in the back and that the production line was at a standstill, and was told to speak to another bloke. This went on for a while until eventually another man in a blue coat said "No"

The badge on his chest said "Convener". The Metro production line should have re-started at 6 am. I went back to my space in the queue, outside a canteen, just before 11:30. The hooter went and I slipped inside for some scran. I was finally tipped at about 4 pm, well into the late shift. I don't know how much that stoppage cost BL, but it was a lot.

As to who was destroying the country, well I think it was splendid joint effort. Unions, lacklustre management and the great British public who deserted British products in droves.

I watched Marks & Spencer labels gradually change from "Made in Britain" to "Made in Israel" to "Made in China". With the exception of Tefal, almost all Sainsbury's dry goods are made either in India, Bangladesh or China. Anyone who buys a product without either looking at where it's made, or seeing and buying anyway is just as responsible. Not far from where I live was a company called Christy & Co. They made first class bed linen and towels. I once stayed in the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London. The towels were Christy. They also supplied a number of prestige retailers such as Harrods. A few years ago the started a cheaper range made abroad because the public wouldn't pay the cost of British products. The factory and offices were bulldozed last year. And so it goes on, Prestige cookware is now made in China and Thailand. Gieves & Hawkes will measure you for your new suit, e-mail the measurements to their highly skilled tailors and within a few days it will be sent.....from Indonesia.

so management hadn't kept on top of stock control and ran out its managements fault

So whoever's "fault" it was, it was OK to delay a production line that employed hundreds, (maybe thousands indirectly) through sheer bloody-mindedness and stupidity?
How does that argument work because I can't figure it out.
Where do you think the money came from to pay these people to be stood around scractching their ar*e?
Under normal circumstances it would be from selling the metros and making a profit, but in BL's case it was tax payer's money.
I am not sure if you really believe this cr*p Dave or you are just winding us all up!

if management had managed then the whole situation would never have happened. i'm not sure how much is even true as no Brummie would ever say "Drive to the roundabout" unless you was at a fairground

That was the whole problem, the unions were so powerful that management wasn't allowed to manage, so rediculous situations as explained above happened. It was the public revulsion for this situation (all powerful unions) that gave the tories the power to take on the unions

:bang:
Please tell me Dave, do you work?

as in employed by some one to do some thing for money?

not any more, but i also don't get free rent, free dentist, free prescriptions, unemployment benefit, income support, tax credits free council tax or any thing else everybody seems to assume everyone gets if they are not at work.

when i did work i worked hard, i've never had a job where you would have time to go on the internet whilst you was getting paid to be doing some thing else, you was lucky if you even had time for lunch.

It must have been a grim place to work if that is where you got your opinion of what is the role of the "worker" and "the management" ! There obviously wasn't much call there for working for the common good of the company so that you could all get paid, assuming it was a private enterprise.

i've had more than 1 job with and with out a boss.

the manager in charge of making sure parts were ordered in good time wasn't working for the common good of the company if they ran out.

the unions power went 20 or so years before rover died so can't see how they still get the blame

The unions, and no doubt some cack - handed management killed Austin Rover. The era of "Red Robbo" etc at Longbridge.
Then came BMW who pick up the remnants of what wasd left in the mid nineties. After 4 or 5 years they gave up and did a deal with 4 shysters who became known as the Phoenix 4. They basically raped and pillaged what was left, and apparently looked after themselves before the Rover name was sold to the Chinese.
I don't think you can claim that the death of Austin Rover as we all knew it was nothing to do with the unions, but I agree that the 2000 to 2005 debacle probably was nothing to do with Unions.

Hardly a small minority. The only reason the number of unemployed is below 3 million is down to the way successive governments have massaged the figures (by redefining, renaming etc).
Where are you getting this from? are your ideas based on anything other than the ramblings of a bigoted minicab driver?

rough figures.
62 million uk residents
30.1 million in work
27.9 million outside of working age (children and OAP)
this leaves you with 4million people or working age not currently employed
1.4~ million are disabled and unable to work
this works out at 2.6million people
current unemployment figures are 2.54million
so about 60,000 out i can't see how you think the unemployment figures are grossly distorted ?

Also "Should have thought about that before you got I'll." You'll what?

You're assuming that a privatised NHS would run along exactly the same lines as private.
Why shouldn't people who go out & get bladdered on purpose, then do stupid things, pay an excess?

why would a private company run the NHS in any other way than for profit ? i,e the same as they currently run their private health services.

Why shouldn't people go out and get bladdered if they pay thought their taxes and NI contributions into the NHS

If you can't find the person who assaulted some innocent person then its the innocent person who suffers twice assaulted then has to pay to be treated.

the smokers already pay a premium in tobacco tax as do the drinkers, but then your argument also applies to people who are 'clinically obese' that's 25% of the UK population by the way they will cost the NHS far more than smokers and drinkers in their life.
i think you will find that the subs your son pays subs for is sports insurance, which covers you against things like loss of earnings, personal liability and legal expenses on top of sports rehabilitation, if he breaks his neck in a scrum it's the NHS ambulances which pick him up, perform and pay for the operations provide the basic equipment and care, the insurance will only pay for things like specialist equipment and sports physiotherapy not covered by the NHS

The American system is based on voluntarily opting into a health plan, The UK system is compulsory - but only for those who pay tax. If the service is available to everyone then everyone who can make a contribution should.
Where is your logic? all those scroungers who don't pay tax and claim benefits should have to pay to receive healthcare from a profit driven private company
or if you want to save a hell of a lot of hassle and problems for the 58million other folk in the UK you could just cut benefits by £10 per person there is no logical reason to scrap the nhs to make a couple of million people pay something to the detriment of 58million, you are off your rocker if you think this is a good idea?

also consider the Government privatises the NHS because they need the money else where so they sell it off, but as with the privatisation of everything else in the UK no one sees tax cuts so now you are forced to pay £100 a month out of your own pocket to pay for your own health care.

as for dave's delusion that management and mismanagement killed off the UK car industry and not the greed of the workers or the unions, you're clearly forgetting that leyland workers used to take bedding into work, complete a full night shift asleep, wake up well rested and head off to their day jobs all on full pay subsidised by the government and our tax payers money, and all fully supported by the unions....
the example given by The Beard is fairly typical of the workers money wasting time wasting tactics all so they could sit twiddling their thumbs and sticking to the man, of course it all had to come to an end at some point and suddenly they were the victims

but i'm sure as always you're 100% correct as always

bet you can't wait to put a cross in the box for Milliband despite being more useless as a labour leader than John Smith was in 1995.

Where are you getting this from? are your ideas based on anything other than the ramblings of a bigoted minicab driver?

To say that you tell people you are an educated person, you don't seem to be able to hold an argument without slinging insults around.

And you never answered my question "Should have thought about that before you got I'll."
You'll what ???

you're not actually holding an argument or having a discussion as you've failed time and time again to respond to anything sensible.

where is your data on 3million unemployed and where is your government cover up of twisted figures?

a few posts back you claimed that no one was paying over £100 a month for health care yet you fail to realise just how much people do pay in through personal and employer NI contributions.

and where are these "unemployed scroungers" as you put it going to get the money to pay for their private health insurance ? they get all their money from the government so its still coming out of your pocket

where are your statistics on how much 'health tourists' cost the NHS and your wonderful free to implement and manage plan on how to keep them out.

its clear you have no idea because you seem to think a £10 diagnostic health insurance policy will provide the same level of service as the NHS currently does, the most expensive private health cover will not provide you with the same depth of treatment as the NHS

I don't tell people i'm educated I have certificates and initials after my name for that. but i can say with a fairly high degree of accuracy that you've not bothered to properly educate yourself on these issues before spewing ill conceived tripe all over this forum

You probably don't realise just how extremist and right wing your ideas, views that segregate society, widen the poverty gap lead millions into hardship poor health and inequality

in response to And you never answered my question "Should have thought about that before you got I'll."
You'll what ???
please explain what you are talking about? because you make no sense at all, its hard to answer a question when you have no idea that its even a question.

and if you're going to get your hand bag out as soon as someone calls you on your idiotic ideas then maybe you shouldn't involve yourself with politics.

read back, did I insult you directly or just compare your ideas i think you'll find it was the latter. (y)

so management hadn't kept on top of stock control and ran out its managements fault
I don't know whether or not it was the fault of a member of management, or a lazy stores clerk, but the fact remains that someone got off their arse and ordered a case of bolts to keep the line going. Someone at Bulten AB in Sweden got off their arse and got a case to the airport and someone, me, got off his arse at 3 in the morning to pick the things up and drive them to Birmingham. You may remember that the ones that didn't get off their collective arses were the union people who were quite prepared to let a shift and a half go by because of sheer bloody-mindedness.

As an aside, in 1975, only 30 years after the end of WW2, a chap my Dad knew went to Leyden Brothers in Salford and bought a new Datsun. Nothing unusual in that you may think, except that this man was taken prisoner in Singapore and spent over three years on forced labour details watching his friends die of disease, malnutrition, ill-treatment and execution. He went through all that and then went and bought a Japanese car. When asked why he said it was so he wouldn't have to buy a British one. He went further and emabarked on a "I fought in the war for that shower....." rant.

if management had managed then the whole situation would never have happened. i'm not sure how much is even true as no Brummie would ever say "Drive to the roundabout" unless you was at a fairground
Firstly, management either couldn't, or wouldn't manage the shop floor. They may have made decisions as to which cars went into production, what trim levels they had and how much they cost. They would have selected dealers and passed numerous management type edicts but the one thing they couldn't do was manage the staff.

There are plenty of documented occasions of strikes being called because staff had been disciplined for acts such as sleeping or eating on the production line. If a strike was called at Longbridge, Cowley or Pressed Steel Fisher would come out in sympathy. Transporter drivers also worked for the firm as well so they could be called out too. If it wasn't Longbridge it'd be one of the others.

The plant had a single storey brick office on the left of the gates although I can't remember which gate now. You parked up and went in with your notes which were stamped with the date and time. You then went and sat down in a room with other drivers who just sat there and read the paper or chatted to other they came across from time to time. When you were called you drove further into the plant until you came to a roundabout where you turned right and stopped behind other vehicles, almost all artics. Gradually you moved forward until you got to a receiving shed on the right where you were tipped.

I believe Brummies do actually speak English, so I'm not quite sure how you expect the man to explain that you need to "drive to the roundabout and join the queue." Actually I missed out the bit where he said "turn right."

As I stated elsewhere on here, my Mum bought a new Mini, CNA877T, if you're interested, in 1979 and the boot seal was so badly fitting that there was around 2" of water in the boot, along with a bacon sandwich. The boot seal coudn't have been that bad a fit to allow a sandwich in, so I have to conclude that someone was having a snack on the production line and threw it in there.

There were cases of food, cheese and fish mainly, being hidden behind door panels and in the heater matrix of various Chrysler products, Hunters and Avengers. Customers would bring them back and effectively file a warranty claim. The dealer obviously couldn't tell the customer what the problem was so the cars started to gain a reputation for electrical faults. I'm not aware of these things happening at Lynwood or the French factories that made the 180 and 2 Litre models.

Plants on Merseyside also had their problems, possibly as a result of the TGWU who were particularly militant, although they calmed down a little after a factory was closed and the head of GM in Detroit made an announcement that UK plants were in the last chance saloon. The factory that closed was, surprisingly, a BL plant, the Triumph facility at Speke. And just for you dave...

So you visited a couple hospitals with an ill relative at some point in the past and know a couple of people who work in health care, and thinks this gives you the bigger picture on how the whole NHS is run?
my partner and I both work in health care and we've worked in hospitals both local and spread across the country, in every department from surgery and theatres to obstetrics and elderly medicine, we both trained at university and our peers are also spread to every corner of this land working in health care, health tourism is not the biggest issue facing the NHS today, its an issue but its not exactly at the top of the agenda when it comes to saving money or NHS resources

are your ideas based on anything other than the ramblings of a bigoted minicab driver?

bigot

Definition
› a person who has strong, unreasonable beliefs and who thinks that anyone who does not have the same beliefs is wrong:

How strange that you call ME a bigot when you dismiss out of hand MY personal experiences of two hospitals AND the experiences of two people close to me.
Whereas YOUR personal experiences plus those of a couple of friends are to be taken as a shining example of the whole NHS.

And BTW, I am not a minicab driver - although what a person's occupation has to do with anything I simply cannot imagine, And why does a minicab driver's opinion hold any less weight than, for example, the Queen's?
in actual fact, the former is far more in touch with reality than the latter!

You asked "where is your data on 3million unemployed and where is your government cover up of twisted figures? "
I don't have that data to hand - however, I remember many of my friends from school going on 'youth opportunity programmes' - which turned out to be nothing more than a way of massaging official unemployment figures. Firms take kids off the dole, get them to sweep up, make the tea, run errands etc - the government still pays their dole money (although it is now called 'training' money) & cuts statistics. Only in a very few cases did this 'training' actually amount to anything.

Edit: first story that comes up on google -
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...obless-could-mask-extent-of-unemployment.html

From a couple of years ago - so it's been going on for decades.
