I'm useless with cars so I'm looking for some advice.

I've had a problem with my car always reporting low oil pressure even when full which I gather is a common problem with the Stilo. But this has led me to being a bit lazy on the old checking of the oil.

The other day I got an engine fault come up and when the car was at a standstill the revs dropped to about 8000 and it felt like it was going to cut out. Also it felt a bit rough to drive. So I stopped and checked a few things and found the oil to be near enough empty, so I put just a litre in to keep me going. It definitely helped and when moving the car feels almost normal, but at a standstill it still drops to about 8000 and nearly stalls unless I rev the engine slightly. The engine fault beeps constantly too.

I probably need to get it into the garage but I'm a little skint right now. Any ideas what it could be or anything I can try to rectify it first?

Any help would be very appreciated.

 I'm sure you mean 800 rpm but thats about normal... you may have a missfire from a dodgy plug, a lead or coil pack but the 1st thing to do is get the oil level right or preferably change it and the filter. When was it last serviced? There may be codes listed in the cars on board computer to give you some clues but a dealer may be best placed to help there and thats not gonna be cheap. Any overheating? Coolant level all OK?

Any oil deposits anywhere? Check around the filter.

Blue smoke from exhaust means you are burning oil.

Mine idles around 700, I think you mean yours idle at 800, not 8000 - because that's a bit high - more like the Lancia Delta HF where you still have 1000 RPM left. :)

Engine size please..:) if its the abarth they drink the stuff..

yes sorry I meant 800 rpm. It fluctuates around there and feels like it's going to stall when stationary.

There are no oil deposits I can see or blue smoke. The last service was about 2 years ago so an oil change wouldn't hurt.

Like I say when running it's not too bad, a bit rougher than normal.

What's the likelihood that I've done any serious damage?

It's a 1.4 still dynamic petrol.

 2 years... and how many miles.... long or short trips?

Jeez sorry dude but you should expect your car to slap you hard....

Thats neglect, how can you expect loyal service from it?

Should be serviced every year at least or at the manufacturers recomended intervals. You may be lucky or you might have killed it... get it fully serviced Pronto then you will know.

Yeah I know, I should look after it better I'll get it booked in for a service next week and keep my fingers crossed. I'm hoping the fact that it's actually running okay when moving is a good sign of no major damage. I do about 9 - 10,000 miles a year. I'll look after it in future though, it's a good car.

My 1.6 allways idles at 800rpm but ive had oil consumption issues before.

I find if you have any kind of mineral oil in it, that it dissapeared very quickly, but since putting semi-synfectic stuff in its been much better.

As for the idle, though about cleaning the Inlet Control Valve? There is a very good guide for it on this forum and its a very very common issue.

I'll try cleaning that valve out tomorrow at work. The descriptions of peoples problems sound almost exactly like my one.

I'm also booked in for a full service on Monday now... way overdue.

Thanks for all the advice everyone and I'm gonna use this forum more and look after my car in future.

Okay I've cleaned the valve, didn't seem that clogged up really. The car is now idling much smoother, but I do get a drop when applying gas still and feels rough at lower speeds.

Sounds to me that there could be carbon in the inlet coz that's what was happening with my escort keep feeling like it was going to cut out when standing still. If its fine now u cleaned that then that's good, but because its still feels rough when driving it needs a service. The car is like a person u have to respect the ingenewety of it and look after it because it don't the car won't look after u if u know what I mean.
