for anyone who lives or works in Australia, how do you find jobs there?

i've looked at loads of websites and applied for several jobs, and never get replys. i'm sure there must be a better way to find jobs, so any advice would be great.

i'm specifically after graduate/professional jobs

thanks in advance (y)

(oh and any advice on where is better to live would be nice)

Probably don't get an answer as you're still a resident of the UK, unless these jobs are specifically for those emigrating to Oz.

Have you checked that you would qualify in the points system?

migration visas (skilled) already accepted for me and my fiancee. (y)

know anywhere that advertises jobs for those willing to emigrate?

i'd love to move first and then find a job, but i'm too scared to take the risk.

Become a chemical engineer and mention you quite like Aus, you will have a business class ticket (return) for you and your family before you check whether your passport is valid ;)

There are specific agencies which help you do this, I don't know of any names though, well at least it's the case for the chemical industry. 3 people are leaving my company in the next few months alone for Perth area. The Australians don't like it though as they pay them similar to what they would get here, far in excess of their standard salaries out there for chemical.

i've heard similar stories about the IT industry, they're bascially bribing skilled workers into emigrating. i like bribes :D

although i'm not greedy, i only want $60,000pa

Same thing applies to Registered Nurses ;)

Also covers Nurses migrating to the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Dubai/ Saudi Arabia, most of Europe etc. etc. etc.

I thought that was from a few years ago, as since then the IT industry has become flooded with graduates chasing after diminishing vacancies?

yeah i missed the golden days :(
but from what i've read there is still a big demand and a shortage of experienced IT professionals. plus i have some good information security management system experience, which seems very in demand at the minute (fingers crossed)

Can I call you a murse or is that still frowned upon?

If you move to Aus, can I call you a convict murse or is that also still frowned upon? ;)

p.s. if I accept my job here they will let me stay here, move to Aberdeen, Abu Dhabi or the US...

Murse???????

Such a difficult decision eh? I mean Aberdeen or Abhu Dhabi/ USA. :chin: It's so hard to choose  :p

Male Nurse = Murse on scrubs, approximately 3 episodes are made up of taking the **** out of one ;)

Aberdeen is the UK's (and much of the world's!) gas/oil skillbase. You're not a proper engineer until you've worked there. Abu Dhabi, as nice as it sounds would be a bit isolating. US is a possibility though...

OIC - lol! :p Not actually heard that one before! Nor have I watched Scrubs for that matter. Does that mean a female nurse is a 'Furse'?!!! :chin:

I'm not bothered what people call me. In fact they can call me what they want! They might have to shout it at the plane overhead though as I fly away with my visa to work in another country for good pay plus high work and living standards :D

I've been to Aberdeen once with my old band when we played a gig at the Pelican Club (wonder if it is still there?) All I can remember was that it was cold, that I didn't get any sleep for two days and the guitarist manage to reverse the van into an off duty Policeman's car on the way back home. Can't say I have fond memories of Aberdeen!

Nurses pay is very good in Abhu Dhabi/ Dubai/ Saudi Arabia but I agree that it would be a bit isolating. Needless to say I don't have any plans for working there when I qualify, and am not sure I'd be entirely comfortable working and living in an Arab country anyway. My first choices are the USA and Australia, with the USA coming out on top as I know it very well and have lots of friends there. But Oz is still an option. I'll decide in about 2.5 years time ;)

What sort of proffession are you looking at??

Western Aus is currently looking for workers in the Mining Industry, to the point where they are offering outrageous salaries and packages to people from the East coast who are willing to move

blu:devil:

Don't know how helpful this is but have you tried sites like seek.com.au, mycareer.com.au, careerone.com.au and government employment sites?

The cost of living in Sydney has pretty much sky-rocketed in the last few years. EVERYTHING is overpriced, over-rated. Don't know why you would want to come here

I tried all those job sites when I was searching for a job and they were just about useless. Try checking the newspapers.

It's very hard to find something today without knowing people.

True, because most of them are placed by agencies so you'll have to go pass them before you even get a chance for an interview.

this is something ive been seriously contemplating with my job and life for the last year or so and over the last month has become a very real desire of mine to help me get away from here

i would be looking to go to either New Zeland or Oz myself, although with my job and the company i work for i could go almost anywhere in the world from the simple perspective of that if we work from that country, ie export and ship, then there should be availability for me to work from there

the biggest problem for me is trying to find a position over there without ruffeling other peoples feathers here in the UK, head office in Antwerp, managing office in Groeningen etc... kinda hard to go behind peoples backs when we all work for the same company so trying to relocate, or at least make good enquiries etc is not going to be easy

Obviously there are loads of factors to consider, e.g. family/friends, income tax, social welfare, lifestyle, weather etc etc. But I think the more important one is whether you'll find something that pays well and puts you in a good position career-wise. Will depend on your education/qualification background, but ultimately it'll depend on demand & supply of what you're looking for.
