I know i said i was gonna get a Punto but the fact is i still have'nt founda job and since i need to get a car before summer plus i need money for holiday etc then i'm not gonna have time to save up and buy something a bit newer like a old punto.

But then i thought i could buy a 1990's Uno which would have basically the same creature comforts as a old punto but would be alot cheaper.

i was wondering if you could help me out by listing what models where out then and which i should go for also what litres where out.

Plus if you could tell me if i am right in saying the interior would be like that of one of the first puntos they built and have the same sort of stuff like.

electric windows
radio
a newer looking steering wheel (you know what i mean)

etc etc.
lol

and pic of inside one would be great only looking at the last unos they made though nothing older.
 
You should go and look at drive both of the cars. Plenty available to go and look at. Any of what we tell is would involve opinions.

No electric windows on most of the models.
Standard radio isn't so bad, digital display (no RDS) FM/MW/LO
What do you mean by "newer looking steering wheel?"

I have a 94 1.0 ie start which is a 999cc injection engine which i guess as I assume you are young, would be the best engine for you.

Remember insurance, you won't get it less - and likely to be more - than £900.

Any more help about it, just ask, also tell me what you mean about steering wheel please?

Uno and Punto interiors are vastly different. I've owned an Uno and now have an early Punto 55SX; the Punto has a far better built interior than the Uno ever had, benefitting from a more modern design and superior materials.
I find the Punto much more comfortable to drive; the seats are more supportive and the heater is much more effective than the Uno's ever was. As Paul says, very few Uno's had electric windows and several other things were fitted only to the very top-end Uno's, if at all: things like remote boot release, headlamp adjustment, front fog lights, central locking etc etc. They're all pretty basic.
That said, the base-model Punto S has next to sod-all in terms of creature comforts; it doesn't even have a temp gauge! And the Uno is the cheaper car to run; more mpg, lower insurance, and the cars themselves are very cheap to buy. So a high-specced Uno may be preferable to a bottom-end Punto.
Your best bet is to test drive some Uno's and Punto's that are within your price range, and decide for yourself whether the Punto is worth the extra cash.

Can't agree more JonnyBoy, you get what you pay for an for a £400 M-reg Uno your interior is going to be no good compared to a £1000 M reg Punto but still both are going to be dead basic as this is what the car is.

Being without central locking is a massive pet hate of mine! When i drove my dad's Scenic, it had a keyfob which did the alarm, immobliser and locking etc. like many more expensive cars. On my Uno if i want similar security I have to put my steering wheel lock on, take off the face plate, lock all doors individually (it must be noted you can only lock when getting out with the key - no pushing down lock then closing unless that is just mine..!) and then set my alarm on my other keyfob. Woo, takes forever and is so annoying!

Having said that you are unlikely to get a Punto with C/L at this price.

There's no doubt the Punto has a more modern interior but set this off with the extra cost of purchase, running costs and higher insurance you need to see if this is worth it. If i had more money than I do I am not sure if i would upgrade but that is my personal opinion.

GOod thing about Uno Mk2; has ISO connector so you can use any CD player you want. Some cars older/of similar age don't and this means fitting a CD player costs yet another £10 and takes more time.

Again, we have both said, test drive and view both.

A Mk1 Punto is preferable in terms of comfort and looks. A Mk2 Uno can't be disounted though, especially as it's your first car.

I own a 1994 Mk2 Uno 1.1 ieS. Click the link below for pictures. It costs virtually nothing to own, run or insure, and is reliable and comfortable. Parts are easy to obtain and also dirt cheap. It has little in the way of creature comforts, no central locking or electric windows, but it does have a remote boot release. :)

I've also owned a Mk1 Punto and they are nice cars to drive. But if you're finances are tight then an Uno will do the job very well indeed.

My Uno is as Steve's. 1993 1.1 i.e.S. The engines are 1108 ccm and produce 50 hp (why is it called "bhp"?). The 1108's produced until february 1993 had 54 hp. Why? Have no idea. The 1.1ieS features: Remote hatch opening. Clock. Cigarette lighter (which took me 7 months to find). Ugly interior furnish. Chromed exhaust end. The layout of the dash is pretty good.

I was well happy when i happened upon that little compartment, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread accept I then had to fit my own cigar lighter because it had a blanking plate...!

So 7 months after I had a stereo project and hit my elbow on the dash, and to my big surprise it opened and revealed - yes: the cigarette lighter. But in the meanwhile I had installed a complete handsfree set with external antenna and radio mute etc. so we have no use for it still.

Are you aware of the prices of tobacco and alcohol in Norway? Well, it's mainly due to insane taxes though. I bought a pack of cigarettes to my mother-in-law a few days ago, Marlboro Light 20 cigs: 65 NKR (and that's cheap) = 5,1 GBP. It is not good for my bank account to be smoking or even worse, becoming an alcoholic. 1 litre vodka: 380 NKR = 31 GBP.

Sounds good! I neither smoke or drink (well much) so I would't mind that but 99% of everyone would!
 
pghstochaj : you can get a simple central locking kit from Maplins for £20. I have it and it fits the uno fine and works great. you can get an adaptor so that it becomes remote central locking but I dont have this. It just locks all the doors (well, i only have 2) by locking any of them. its also compatible with some alarms so that when u press the alarm activate button, it locks the doors or when u lock the doors it activates the alarm.

very simple kit to install. took me about an hour (needs a bit of drilling to mount the motors to the doors etc) and it works great (except the drivers side motor can stick sometiomes when locking from passengers side but this is my fault as i put a screw into the motor when putting the door cards back on.... oooops).

its an easy and quick way to get rid of having to walk around the car to lock it all!

Yeah, cheers, i have seen the kit at maplin and also on ebay but I am put off with how much of a universal fit it is and how long it will take it fit! Where did you wire it all into? It's not a HUGE problem but, well, it is dead annoying especially as i carry passengers frequently. SOmetimes I leave the passenger door (on the side of the pavement when i park) left unlocked then find out the following day! The fact it hasn't been broken into with the door unlocked is a good indicator of my area really!

It has become quite a joke with my friends. If i take them anywhere they are obviously used to their much nicer family cars so i lock my side and make the central locking noise as i run around to the other side with funny looks from other people in the car park lol.

I never thought when i got the car it would be so annoying but you either have to sit in the car whilst everyone gets out (which can take forever when people are in the back (!!) or you walk around and I am getting too lazy to do that. But then again, i won't keep the car when I go to university in Sept. so i am not sure if it is worth it for me to invest the time into it.

Decisions decision.

the kit fits the uno with slight modifications which are simply bending the stick that attatches to your original locking. you have to bend it in 2 directions and so using a pair of pliars is a good idea. it took me about an hour to fit. you have 2 master motors in the front doors and 2 slave motors in the back doors. if either of the master motors are operated (by turning ur key) then all of the motors copy it. The wiring is fairly simple. I have it wired directly to the battery. Theres a little control box that all motors are connected to.. this can just sit inside the dash somewhere.

its very easy to fit.
