If you want to know what's involved in swapping all the bits of a turbo into another shell, look here:

Dunc is going for a full out restoration as well as doing some mega upgrades along the way, so that's about as extreme (and as expensive) as it gets. However, it will give you an idea of what's involved.
Two other member on here have carried out similar conversions, but 'Muzzie' hasn't posted for ages (I think he's sold his mk1 45 turbo conversion) and 'Fro$ty' with the mk2 45 converted to a Hormann turbo has been very quiet lately. They'll know more about the conversion than anyone else.
However, if your rusted mk1 turbo is complete and running well (meaning no parts need refurbishing or replacing), it is possible to get the bulk of the conversion done over a weekend. However, you should really put a few weeks aside at least, as if the shell is rusty so will a lot of the bolts holding everything in... Best get a welding torch to heat them and an angle grinder as a last resort.
It is basically a nut and bolt swap, but as Turboned said you need to swap EVERYTHING from the turbo into the doner shell. Without the turbo suspension and brakes you'll likely end up in a hedge the first corner you encounter...
Good luck!
