Technical urgant engine swap

Technical urgant engine swap

If you want to know what's involved in swapping all the bits of a turbo into another shell, look here:

https://www.fiatforum.com/lets-talk...-new-thread-new-shell-updated-12-06-06-a.html

Dunc is going for a full out restoration as well as doing some mega upgrades along the way, so that's about as extreme (and as expensive) as it gets. However, it will give you an idea of what's involved.

Two other member on here have carried out similar conversions, but 'Muzzie' hasn't posted for ages (I think he's sold his mk1 45 turbo conversion) and 'Fro$ty' with the mk2 45 converted to a Hormann turbo has been very quiet lately. They'll know more about the conversion than anyone else.

However, if your rusted mk1 turbo is complete and running well (meaning no parts need refurbishing or replacing), it is possible to get the bulk of the conversion done over a weekend. However, you should really put a few weeks aside at least, as if the shell is rusty so will a lot of the bolts holding everything in... Best get a welding torch to heat them and an angle grinder as a last resort. ;)

It is basically a nut and bolt swap, but as Turboned said you need to swap EVERYTHING from the turbo into the doner shell. Without the turbo suspension and brakes you'll likely end up in a hedge the first corner you encounter...

Good luck!

Chas very politely didn't talk about the spelling :p Consider yourself lucky, calvins_tipo!

It is quite a bit of work whichever way you do it, but yes, there are usually a few good-condition 3-drs around (a month or two back, one was for sale right here on this forum).

But yes, all the parts will fit in perfectly if you transfer everything... expect it to take a week of work. Good summer project. Try to buy the best Mk1 and in a colour you like. The 5-dr diesel that you've linked to would not be my first choice. I would pick a 3-dr.

Now, thinking about insurance... and insuring it as the original Mk1 Turbo...

Of course, there would be absolutely no way to transfer the identity of the original Turbo to another Mk1 3-dr... after all, the chassis number is firmly stamped into the metal and there's no way that an angle grinder could cut through that, or that any welding there could be done. Also the type plate is attached with plastic clips - completely unremovable.

alright mate, just seen this thread. and as people have already said, theres alot of work involved and depending how mechanicly minded u are.

as 1986uno45s posted, my restoration thread is about as extream and as expensive (well, actually i could make it better and will ;) ) as it gets. but if ur on a budget, then u will nedd 95% of the parts off the turbo. brakes, suspension, engine, loom, u'll have to put the mk1 dash board in as u need the UT clacks and mk1 clocks wont fit in a mk2 dash, the wiring loom will need to go in, petrol tank with extra fuel resivouar (spelling lol ).

its alot of work, but can be done! ive done mine outside, on the steep hill on the side of a road! lol

Just saw this thread...Yes as Chas says i have converted a 1 litre uno start into a 1.4 uno turbo i.e. Its pretty straight forward if you know what you are doing lol
You can transfer the entire uno turbo engine, loom, interior etc into any uno shell, the shells are the same, in fact you could even have a mark 1 shell and fit a mark 2 front end or vice versa with a bit of fiddling around. Everything bolts up in position accordingly. But you must do everything properly, uprate brakes, suspension etc The normal uno has rear drums whereas the turbo has discs, i think the rear beam has to be swapped over, Biz or Dunc will know about that one for definate, i just swapped mine over as it was quicker lol

Best bet would be to use a 1 litre mark 2 shell and get an M reg if possible but any uno will be fine as long as it doesnt have rust on the main Chassis. Doors, bonnets and wings are easily replaceable. Look out for rust around the sunroof (if it has one) better to get one without a sunroof IMO, Rear suspension Turrets, Front suspension turrets, Petrol cap and arches are the main areas.
The mark 1 uno turbo tail gate is made of Fibre glass and therefore will not rust and its lighter in weight too. If you fit a Mark 1 tail gate to a mark 2 you have to change the tail lights and hinges as dunc has done to his. (see duncs restortation thread for more info)

Has the donor vehicle you've found got any service history?? Uno turbo engines are well built but need to be looked after, you could end up with a car that is going to cost you an arm and a leg if it starts to smoke as soon as you fire her up. Best to do a full rebuild of the engine at the same time as doing the conversion to freshen her up but this will cost money. If you are sure the engine is a good runner then its just a matter of doing the swap over.

Lastly as Alex says you cant change the identity of the vehicle, meaning your car will be classified as a modified 1 litre and NOT an uno turbo which will cost more to insure...IF you tell them that is lol wink wink not advisable though as it will null and void the insurance and you will end up in some seriously hot water if you get caught mate. There are a few ways round it but we all know who the man is to speak to on that matter lol (no names mentioned this time round hehe)
Thats all i can say at this stage if you have any other questions ask away

The emphasis on my post was that you could, actually, change the identity of the Mk1 replacement shell to remain the same as the previous Turbo, thus you would be insured as a Turbo and it would all be good. This is how I'd tackle the problem. I wondered if the way I put it may have been a bit too subtle :)

atlast got the car he he
tried to start it but no go it was turning over but no spark it has a sparkrite alarm but i dont know if it acts as a immobaliser or not need to disconnect it if so....engine sounds ok when trying to start it but wont know till it fires ive checked ht leeds and distributor just wondering what else it could be remember this car has been sitting for roughly four years but yes i think at this stage i am ganna need a new shell because old one is very rusty n dont think its repairable

The shell doesn't actually look too bad, I think I'd be tempted to do the welding and reskin the door because swapping all the bits too a good shell sounds like a lot of work. No idea on why the car isn't firing. You got fuel? Checked the fuel pump? You actually got a spark?

i will take some more pics of rust holes and patches some r relly quite bad like both side seals are quite bad and there is a hole either side in floor in both footwells i am definatly ganna get a quote for the welding im ganna try and find a jack the lad to do it vcheap but theres a fair ol bita work to be done and still gotta get it firing.....
im outta work for a while so will have more time and consentration as long as u lads can help as much as poss i recon i can do it im not giving up easy im going to try everything, till i send this one to the ebay auction

ive had a rough estimate on the welding price and i think its ganna be round 400 quid for all of it remembering there quite alot to do(y) now just gotta save up:bang: (n)

For £400 you're far better off looking for a better shell. There are some very tidy lower end models, some with pristine shells, for far less. Plus unless the welding is done to a very high standard it will look patched up, and will probably only last from one MOT to the next. Once the rot sets in it's very hard to eradicate :(

Time to start looking on Ebay for the one little lady owner, low mileage, garaged all its life 1.0 Uno ;)

i dont have a garage or anything like that so no were to do the project and to tell the truthe i cant be bovered with it all i got quoted today 300 quid for welding and 100 for brakes to be sorted but i am only going to go ahead with it if i can start it and if it doesnt smoke like a steam train so if the engine is fine and it runs fine ill get it all welded up and sorted knowing me i wont hyave the car longer than a year anyway lol i just want it on the road to rally round in for a while then ill just stick it on ebay at a reserved price of like £400 or something engine itself is worth that ifit runs fine its only done 60 odd thousand miles so ill just let this old boy weld it all up for mot and then tax it n just run it round for a while see what things r really wronge with it then fix em then go from there suppose then after that i think ill go for a punto or maybey a nissan almera 1.6 sri on a p plate dunno yet just see how this goes
