purge the system? whats that mean? completly empty it? I was thinking of just letting the water run empty and then doing it. they filling it with distilled water and some antifreeze etc. Is this a good idea?

Over time the cooling system fills up with rust and gunge. When you purge the system you put in a cleaning agent and run the engine for a while before draining the system. You then stick a hosepipe in one of the hoses and wash the system through. Full instructions will be on the radiator purge bottle and in your manual.

Advantages are a reduction in corrosion, better radiator and heater operation, improved engine cooling performance.

If you clean out your header tank it also looks pretty n blue for a while. ;)

You need to refill with a 50/50 coolant mix.

Is it a good idea? Depends on how you feel, it's not necessary but is worth doing once a year.

Taking the time to do a system flush might prove to be a worthwile move, since you're already dropping off most your "coolant"... and I'm adding the commas because if its looking orange/brown, its no longer worth the denomination B) It won't take too much of your time and it won't be too expensive... it will make your water pump last longer and make the whole system dissipate heat more efficiently, reducing the risk of burning the head gaskett.
