hi uno people!!, i have a marea and cinq, so i dont often get to your section - but -
my daughters uno1.1e start seems to have blown its head gasket (overheating, losing water, white smoke from exhaust), unfortunately she lives in warwick 170 miles from me, so i am driving down this weekend to change gasket.
what i need to know is, is it a straight forward job, ive done other cars with no probs but ive never looked at an uno, are there any tips etc you can give me?. also does anyone know where i can get the head skimmed (preferably on a saturday morning)
cheers for any help
andy

Hi Andy
My mate who is a competenr mechanic done mine a few years back{unos are prone to this problem) he commented how easy it was as there is a lot of space to work around on the engine bay and no special tools were needed.
The cam belt also has easy access and should be changed if your doing the head.
As for skimming cannot help u there im afraid.
The guys on the forum here have done this kind of job b4 so I am sure they will give u some usefull pointers.
Good luck
Pete

cheers for the replies,
have put it all back together, got head skimmed in nuneton,
but - it wont start, have got spark, compression etc but will only start if i squirt petrol straight into the carb mouth.
is there some sort of fuel cut off solinoid or something?
cheers

Hi Andy,

Please see SPI diagram attached.

Have you checked the fuses in the fuel pump / SPI relay (16 +17 on diagram) mounted behind Coil?

Mac.

Sorry for late reply. I had a plan earlier this year to make a head-gasket-change-guide for the Uno. Unfortunately it is still a project, but I will do my best to make it happen.

There are no special tools needed. Just remember the Uno has metric sizes, and not inches. There is one thing... Problem is that it is difficult to explain in English, but I´ll give it a try and you must try to imagine in pictures what I describe. After removing the cam cover, 10 cylinder head bolts will be revealed. The mid-front bolt is not accessible with a standard wrench (or torque-wrench) and "bit". It is this "bit"-gadget you need... It must be extruded about 5 cm (2") to fit down there - the wrench will NEVER go down there. This particular bit (for the bolt´s head) will also have a limited diameter to fit.

I´d purchase new head bolts, as I didn´t. This is why I have to do it again...

Also get a new cam belt and the bearing that tightens it if you have driven 100.000 km (60.000 miles). These are sold as sets. Use a paint marker to mark the wheels and cam belt for easy and safe refitting. If a new cam belt is to be used, transfer the marks to it. This is a guarantee for fitting the cam belt correct, and having crank shaft / pistons, and cam aligned perfectly.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, i am going down to wawick tomorrow, so hope to get it fixed. i have got a spare throttle body from a scrappy, so if all else fails i can swap it over to eliminate that as a fault, but i am hoping it is fuses or wiring as you suggest louie bee
cheers
andy

Hi all,
just to let you know, it was a dodgy wire on one of the connectors onto the throtle body, so now all is well (except it goes for MOT today, am crossing fingers)
thanks for all your help
andy
