Can anyone help, please......................I have a 1995 Uno diesel. For the second time now the windscreen wiper motor is going intermittent - the problem begins with a momentary stop mid sweep and becomes progressively less intermittent until the wiper doesn't sweep at all and then for no apparent reason after a few moments the wiper will work again but eventually the problem becomes so bad the wiper just doesn't work anymore. I have had this exact problem before which was cured by replacing the wiper motor thereby eliminating the wiring or switch from causing the problem. The question is does anyone know what exactly causes theis problem and is there a sneaky repair that one can do to the motor unit?

Any comments gratefully received
thanks in advance etc

Motor units are normally sealed and not easy to repair - best to get another from the breakers!

If the motor doesn't work then you will need a new unit - try e-bay.

If it is the wiring you can by pass it and wire it into the battery via a switch on the dash (which you add) this also allows you to 'park' the blade where you like ie the boy racer way in the middle.

I had to 'hard' wire a wiper motor at the start of a rally i did in one of my Uno's literally mins before starting.

Thanks for the reply folks.....It seems therefore that this must be a weak point on the uno - this will be the 3rd one I am replacing.........it seems as though the motor brushes are worn to me........no one know how to get at them?
thanks etc

Hi All,

Sorry I’m late.

I’d guess there could only be 3 causes.
Dirt (in switch contacts or around Brushes)
A connection problem. Broken wire or corroded contacts
Worn Brushes.

Firstly, do you have an old one that you think may be broken?

Do you know it there is a voltage across the motor contacts when there should be.

(Not that it really matters) – is it front of back?

Let Us know…

Steve that is v kind of you I'll think on that - really very kind I mean it.
Louie I think I might have the old broken one buried in my garage somewhere.........I think it is the motor brushes but I don't know how to get to them..........the car is so close to going to FIAT Uno heaven that I don't see myself spending much more money on it.........it has been a fantastic little car (diesel) but things are starting to go wrong too frequently now...oh by the way it is the front wiper motor
thx

Hi

The same happened to mine, so I got a new motor from a scrap yard, but it must have been from a much older model, as it worked perfectly on the normal setting but didn't have the wiring for intermittant wipe, which was a bit pants.

Eventually i dismantled my old one and applied a bit of electrical lubricant to the motor, and it worked fine again.

:) hi i had same car, same problem and fixed it with ease, if you take the motor off there is a circuit board on it and it has solder joints which become fractured, all i did was re-solder the joints which were obviously broke and ended the problem, i now no longer have to bang the dash to make them work ,dont know why i put up with it for so long! good luck. p.s. i have now sold the car but i stumbled accross this site by accident and thought i should help you in return for all the help i receive from other forums.

Thanks for this reply but unfotunately I don't have the car anymore, but nice to know that there would have been a cheap fix had I still owned thecar!
Tom
