Technical Engine running hot and lack of hot air in cabin

I wonder if Jo0lz replaced the bolts on the X1/9's engine when he went through all those head gaskets. That's a different engine
anyway and more stressed than the little FIRE in the Uno
.
YuP I used new bolts
Problem in the end was the head was pin-holed somewhere
Or possibily fractured
Ultimately I knew I had personally DuFFeD it
By putting a load of stone cold water into the engine when it was hot enough to be burning the oil off the outside of the block from a known oil leak
The thermal SHoCK did that alloy head no good whatsoever

If you have a replacement engine exactly the same it would take half a day to swap them over

I only needed a engine crane because I left my gearbox insitu
and it was pretty darn near impossible to balance the engine on a trolley jack and waggle the gearbox into the right location for the input shaft to go straight into the clutch ALL ON MY OWN

In the end I hired an engine crane from the hire shop round the corner from my house at 9am, took it back at 11am that same morning as by then I'd done the engine transplant

So you looking for some help..........;)

Sorry to hear about that ucof, I`m gutted for ya :(

I wouldnt bother with a HG change on an Uno I`d just got with little knowledge of its history, especially with the rusty coolant that came out after the initial (long) journey home, suggested there was possibly a long term leak which was topped up with water for some time, this means theres likely to be either a build up of rust particles/sludge throughout the engines coolant passages & possible corrosion internally.

I`d be looking for a low mileage 1108cc lump to bung in if I were you mate, its a straight swap & an instant 20% power gain.

The grumpiness and annoyance still continues :(

Dad has offered me the Polish Uno's engine. So I'll be grabbing it and the gearbox next weekend. We'll remove the bonnet, boot and windscreen from the black spares and repairs Uno, then scrap it, and the silver one will become the next donor vehicle.

All I will swap out is the engine, as the gearbox and chassis on the UcofUno is sound.

I'm not going to change the HG as you suggest Alex, it's going to be cheaper (and more educational) for me to swap the engine out myself (with help ;)). Unfortunatly, money is the main issue here and I need to spend as little as possible on this, hence why taking the engine apart and getting the head skimmed wouldn't happen. :(

Joolz - I'd happily welcome you with open arms, a mug full of tea and a smile if you fancied a trip down to Wales over a weekend! ;)

a73uk - cheers for the idea of the 1108 lump, but I'm going to be sticking with the 999 engine - I don't need extra power, I'm unsure how it would affect my insurance... and I happen to (hopefully) have a 999 engine on standby. If the Polish Uno is not a 999cc engine, then I'm going to crap myself and might have to take the engine from my other red Uno :(

anything of any use on the black uno donor, shame to scrap it if some usefull bits still lurking on it

Theres an engine (which I think has a blown head gasket, and I think is a 903cc), boot, bonnet, ECU, windscreen, doors, seats, steering wheel, dashboard, wheels, suspension springs and pistons, seatbelts, rear view mirror, wing mirror (left)...
and I think that's about it really...

No worries :p

I'll have a word with a colleague at work, who owns a spanner :D

Attached are photos of the Polish engine - looks the same to me..

Dad has however said, that if it can be done for around the £200 mark, he is willing to pay for just the head gasket to be done.

The garage I go to has quoted... you guessed it.. £200

edit - engine numbers from the VIN plate match :)

If your Dad is kind enough to pay, I still think you should get the head gasket fixed :p

It's a lot more than it would cost to do it yourself, but look at it this way - it becomes the garage's responsibility to take care of all potential problems (engine block core plugs, head resurfacing) as they will have to offer some kind of (however limited) warranty. If you undertake fitting that other engine, who's to know you won't be in much the same situation in a few months' time...

what are the panels and doors like on your black one ucof? chuffle has slightly rusty doors :( pleease don't scrap it we could do with quite a few bits although I think dave (tatty) wants to put a bigger engine in than the 999cc we have already.

let us know how it goes...we have the intermittent overheating and lack of hot air in cabin but at the moment are putting it down to airlocking rather than anything more serious...(furious touching of wood). ours is off the road as front suspension completely destroyed at the moment. :(

L3Uno -its a 5 door model so I don't think it would fit yours - the front 2 panels have already gone however. You are welcome to the doors though. Drop me a line as to if you want them :)

Alex, Joolz - im getting the car towed down to the garage today :)

Car is now in the garage.)

After a rather scary towjob, my female 'friend' got us there safely. Was her first time giving a towjob, but she handled it well, if not a little rough at first. She thought it was a good idea to take a running jump at towing, and almost snapped my head off )

I told the garage to do it as cheaply as possible, but ensure they changed the core plugs. I think they will be reskimming the head anyway.
Im just worried in case it turns out to be worse than just a new gasket needed and there is a crack in the block.

Another great installment in UCOF's jnournal!
Great reading.

Off topic completely, sorry UCOF

As for silly things I have done. I have been learning how to programme ECUS in my Saabs.

I had successfully flashed my T5.2 with a new bin. (for those who know what that means)
Next one was my T5.5. I spent a day trying to erase and reflash the ECU.
It failed everytime, then I discovered I was trying to flash my T5.5 with a T5.2 bin.

So many differences between cars - not just confined to Unos.

girls always seem to TUG a little TOO hARD the first time they try it :tosser:

NOW why would you think that?
If you put cold water in the engine when it was HOT you may just have warped the head.
I don't see how you could have cracked the block.
Once the garage get the head off if they drop a straight edge across the matting face of the head they will be able to tell you if its warped or not. They should do this before sending it to the machineshop for the skimming and refacing to be sure that it is re-usable and they are not wasting any of your money skimming and refacing a head that is too far out of straightness/flatness. Good Mechanics will do this as a matter of course

Hmmmmmm matey you may as well be talking in KLinGon . . means NoWT to me....though I wish it did and I could have the same sort of fun wth the ECU in our Smart Car.......(y)

Oh well:
First you said it all.

T5.2 and T5.5 are different versions of the Trionic ECU - "the computer chip" that runs the engine.

They can be easily retuned by T5 suite - Once you learn how - That is what I was referring to.

If you want to know what it is all about PM me.
Might not be any help for your Smart car, but understanding what is all about it might mean you could look into playing with the Smart car ECU.

/Robin
