Just yours... :p

I'd stop doing so much woodwork in the back if I were you ;)

Not just yours george, mine too!! dont know quite what it is a combination of mould and it turning to dust, first tried ceaning it but that didnt work so i blew it off with compressed air, then painted it bmw bumper grey, looks nice, Ant!

yeah i tried cleaning my too but i ended up covered in dust and the rook lining started to fall apart lol . . . can you get some pics mate ?

I think we have different type of humour.

Ah well :)

My roof lining is fine, byt then again, I don't touch it very often.
I'd suggest you give it a good hoovering, and then use upholstery cleaner to get any tough stains out.

There should be an un-Thanks button for that post Ucof! :p

Seriously, you CAN'T clean the headlining, it's made of seemingly recycled paper compressed and printed with a dot pattern. It really does fall apart. It's the absolute lowest grade of material possible; an area where FIAT really cut costs (except for the headlining of the Mk1 Uno Turbo, which is a totally bespoke and irreplaceable material).

I have also applied various types of thick paint to Uno headlining, which is reasonably successful but can stink :) Thin paint just soaks in invisibly.

Best bet is to go to an auto trimmer and buy some REAL headlining material, as used in normal cars (not the Uno...) Headlining cloth has a thin foam backing and comes in a hundred shades of grey (well, not literally, but it varies from a warm grey (which you want for the Uno) through to a cool grey/blue. It comes on a wide roll, plenty wide enough for the Uno, and a tape measure will tell you how long it needs to be - allow a bit extra for the ridges around the sunvisors.

You'll also need a spraycan, possibly two, of contact adhesive - buy the best type you can find, ideally one large can of 3M Headliner adhesive will do the job. You're looking at about NZ$90 (35 pounds) worth of materials.

Remove the headlining from the car - easy on the Uno, it comes out through the tailgate opening - remove the interior light mounting (noting which way around it goes), then spray the whole area with a good even coat of adhesive.

Spray the material second (it dries fast) - then carefully roll it into place from the back to the front, being very careful to start off straight , avoiding and smoothing out wrinkles as you go. You'll find the material really stretchy so it copes with the hump in the middle very well, and the tricky bits around the visors (keep it fairly taught).

Once it's all in place, trim the edges exactly (fold over and glue the edges if you like, you can always trim them off later if the headlining won't fit properly), cut out the holes for handles, interior light, mirror etc. with a sharp knife. Refit to the car, using the interior light housing to hold it up (it has a twist-lock fastener).

There may be the odd small flaw in the result - particularly if there are big gouges or flakey areas in the backing - but generally-speaking, it will be a huge improvement in every way except originality.

I've re-trimmed headlining on a FIAT Croma ('88 model), Tipo (just as bad as the Uno), BMW 320 ('93 model, fell down like a tent), and my Uno Turbo, though in the last case I used black speaker box carpet for that warm fuzzy feeling.

The following applies to the Mk1 Uno Turbo and other cars... where removing existing foam-backed material, the foam will have disintegrated and must be scrubbed off the backing completely. Don't bother trying to re-stick existing material - that doesn't work, the disintegrating foam undermines the adhesive and without a foam backing, the material is never smooth.

I was just setting you up to correct me and look even more knowledgeable! ;)

That's kind of you :)
However, note that I couldn't be bothered measuring the actual length of headlining material needed for the Uno, so if someone's caught short by a few centimetres - which RUINS the job, you can't join it - we'll know why :p

when your headlining is saggier than a fat birds gunt.....

So how will I go repairing my roof lining on the backside, the side that goes against the roof. Mine has two cracks in it so it doesn't hold up to the roof well. I was wondering about fibreglassing it to strengthen it.

Robin, in your case I would just use duct tape to fix the headlining, or just replace it, second hand ones are cheap.

Are there still good ones for a sunroof model as well. And I imagine getting it here without being damaged would be an issue. However, I will keep my eyes open.

Sunroof models (i.e. mk1 S, SL and SX models with that option) had the same self destruct material. And shipping one to NZ in one piece would be a nightmare as it's big and floppy (ooer!) and easily damaged/ broken. Maybe a mk1 Uno with factory fitted sunroof would have the nicer material fitted? Best bet is to follow Alex's advice and retrim the original (y)

uCof and Jai, language please ;)... come on guys, I may be forced to clean it up :nono: That would be interesting, editing a post from the moderator

Chas is right though, shipping a headlining material would be impractical. I'd love an original headlining material for my Turbo (as Jai pictured), but I don't think it's going to happen. I think there are only a couple or three in NZ that don't have sunroofs.

Black speaker box carpet looks better than you might expect and has a nice cosy feeling. It's hard to get a good photo, especially with a flash - the flash tends to make it look more grey than black.

I meant to say a mk1 Uno TURBO above, as that had the different material compared with the standard models

And Alex, your roof lining looks great! I may try that myself when I get back home (y)

yep, woodworking is one thn! otherwise, mk 1 foamy thing was removed and painted several times in nice thick shiny paint, perfect, can even wipe it after if you wish,,
