hi there everyone. Basically i got talking to my girlfriends dad the other day and he started harping on about his cortina he's re building and doing up and i told him about my on going project which is my little mk1 uno turbo. After a lot of friendly banter we decided we would race each other down the quater mile at shakespear county race way when are cars are done. He's running a limp old 2ltr pinto but he's been round a while so im sure he's got some tricks up his sleeve. What i want to know from you guys is, what times do mk1 and mk2 uno's run down the quater? from standard all the way up to highly modified. also any hints or race tips would be great. Many thanks, Dave. :slayer:

well, i took my mk2 up the quarter at pod and ran a 14.6, not overly modded at 1bar stripped out,
im sure amys mk1 is aint far off that now with ported exhaust manifold, 1 bar, exhaust, filter, full interior and sub box

If you're not a pants driver a completely stock one should do low 15s. A Cortina with a stock Pinto won't do that, but a few small mods will get 140bhp or so and it'll do 15s I would imagine.

The drag strip is the best way to test a cars straightline speed. As a rule 15s = high 6/low 7 sec 0-60, 14s = 5.5-6.8 sec 0-60. Bearing in mind a stock scooby wrx will do high 14s, and most ferraris/lambos will struggle to run 13s.

Depends on which model Cortina you're talking about. The mk1 and 2 are smaller and lighter than the later mk3/4/5, so the power to weight ratio would be quite good even with a bog standard 2.0 litre Pinto putting out 100bhp. However, the mk1/2 would need modding as it never had the Pinto fitted as standard so I suspect your girlfriend's dad has a later model.

Also, the Pinto can be modded quite easily to push out up to 150bhp with a few choice parts. They can go above that but it starts getting expensive and requiring a lot of work. And the bottom end is immensely strong seeing as it's the basis for the Sierra Cosworth 200bhp unit!

The Cortina would have an initial advantage at the start line by being rear wheel drive so would be likely to launch better (the weight would shift to the back and increase grip thus reducing wheel spin). However, once on the move the lighter Uno would have the advantage and with the turbo engine the mid range power would trounce the normally aspirated Cortina.

As standard a 2 litre Cortina 3/4/5 will accelerate to 60mph in about 11 seconds. A mk1 Uno turbo will do it in about 8.5, so the Cortina would need quite a lot of modifications to even match the standard Uno turbo. And if you wind the boost up on a UT then the Cortina would struggle to even get close I suspect.

So as long as you run decent tyres and your car is in good running order I reckon that this would be a one horse race in your favour ;)

Re: Uno turbo quater mile times?

think he said its a mk 4 or 5 and he's got a set of twin webbers for it and a performance cam.my uno when its finally done will have been totally stripped out, sound proofing and all. I'll be running a hybrid turbo, staright through exhaust system and filter at the least. Hoping to upgrade the intercooler and turn up the boost as well though.by the sounds of it he should have reason to be scared of the uno :D

Re: Uno turbo quater mile times?

You'll have him good mate

Ive seen 230bhp (now 240bhp) HPE (Harris Performance Engines) engined mk1 escort wheelie mate, that did 11.7 1/4 mile!
Dont underestimate a Pinto! lol

He'd need at least 150bhp/***TRQ to match your uno
